Tornados Conclude Postseason Run, Fall 1-0 to Lions

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College women's soccer team (6-2-1) made its first postseason appearance in the USA South Conference on Tuesday evening, falling in a hard-fought 1-0 decision to Piedmont College (8-6-1) in the first round of the West Division Tournament.

Senior goalkeeper Rebeccah Rojas (6-2-1) saved a total of seven shots on the evening, while junior defender Emma White led all Tornados with four shots - two of which on-goal. Taylor Richardson, Sallie Riggan, and Ashley Royster also each tallied shots on the evening.

In spite of being outshot 20-7 in the contest, the Tornados were able to put 5-of-7 attempts on-frame. The Lions controlled all four corners in the contest.

Piedmont's Katelyn Smith put a long free-kick into the back of the net in the 48th minute of the contest, then concluded the shutout to advance to the West Division Championship match.

The Lions logged seven shots and won a pair of corners through the first 32 minutes of action before Riggan tallied BC's first shot of the game. White tallied a pair of shot attempts on free kicks, while Richardson also logged a shot attempt as the two sides went into the intermission deadlocked, 0-0.

A Brevard foul in the 48th minute led to Piedmont's long free-kick attempt that turned into the game-winning goal, as Smith lined up from nearly 40 yards out and put the ball past Rojas in the top-half of the goal.

The Lions were able to outshoot Brevard 11-2 down the stretch, as White logged both of BC's shot attempts over the course of the second half. Rojas tallied five saves down the stretch to keep the game within striking distance.

Brevard will conclude its Spring 2021 regular season with a home-and-home series with local WNC-area institution Warren Wilson College, with game dates and times still to be determined.
