Second Quarter Run Lifts Scots to Win over Tornados

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College women's lacrosse team (1-1) fell by a final of 21-13 to the visiting Alma College Scots (3-0) on Wednesday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field. 

Freshman Emily Denaga scored a career-best six goals to lead all Tornados, while Parker Moore added four goals. Reigning USA South Player of the Week KC Collins added two goals and three assists, while Savannah Colliver added a goal and Ashton Cashwell dished out an assist. Denaga also secured six draw controls for Brevard. 

Lexi Maclauchlin (1-1), the reigning USA South Defensive Player of the Week, totaled a career-high 17 saves in front of goal for the Tornados, while also securing 10 ground balls. 

Emma Keith and Sam Peterson scored a team-high six goals each for Alma, as the Scots put 21 past the Tornados. 

The Scots were able to go 15-for-19 on clear attempts and hold Brevard to a 14-for-30 mark, while forcing 29 Tornado turnovers. Alma outshot Brevard 49-25 in the matchup, while BC totaled 17 saves and 19 ground balls. Brevard went 5-for-8 on its free-position shots, while holding Alma to a 4-for-10 mark. 

Denaga and Moore got the scoring going for Brevard, hitting back-to-back goals less than a minute apart to give Brevard an early 2-0 lead. Alma was able to answer back with a three goal run, taking a 3-2 advantage with 4:50 left in the first quarter. BC's Denaga, a freshman from Buford, Georgia, put in a pair of Collins assists as Brevard retook the lead, 4-3, as the first quarter expired. 

Alma put together a five-goal run to kick off the second quarter, including three short handed scores, to retake the lead 8-4. Moore stopped the stretch of Scot goals with a power-play goal, unassisted, to cut the Alma lead back down to three. 

Denaga cut further into the Scot lead with a score at the 5:30 mark, but the visitors answered right back, scoring three-consecutive goals to take an 11-6 lead in the halftime following a big eight-goal second quarter. 

Alma kicked off the second half with three goals, including two in the first three minutes, to push its lead up to eight, 14-6. Brevard was able to score three-straight goals to cut the deficit back to five, 14-9, after goals from Moore, Denaga, and Collins. 

Alma used five goals at the end of the third quarter into the beginning of the fourth period to extend its advantage to a 10-goal margin. BC did not give in, however, as the Tornados went on to score four consecutive goals - including two man-down - to cut the Alma lead to six goals with 3:04 left to play. 

The Scots ended the match with a pair of scores to wrap up their road win, 21-13. 

Brevard will return to play on Saturday with its first road contest of 2022, as the Tornados travel to Lynchburg, Virginia to face Randolph College at 1 p.m.
