Monarchs Escape Tornados in Conference Opener

Monarchs Escape Tornados in Conference Opener

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Autumn Kraemer led Brevard College with six goals, however, the BC women's lacrosse team (1-3, 0-1 USAS) were unable to catch the Methodist University Monarchs (2-2, 1-0 USAS), as the Tornados fell by a final of 14-11 on Saturday afternoon at Monarch Stadium in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Kraemer, a freshman from Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, scored a total of six goals and dished out an assist for seven points altogether. The attacker has now totaled 23 goals and three assists for 26 points through the first four games of the 2020 campaign.

Micaiah Vacchiano and KC Collins each scored a pair of goals, while Collins recorded a pair of assists. In the last two games for Brevard, Collins has produced eight goals and six assists. Freshman goalkeeper Carlie Henning saved 10 shots in the contest.

The prevailing Monarchs benefited from a six-goal output from Rosa Williams, while Keegan Foyles produced a four-goal, two-assist performance. Winning goalkeeper Jem Golombeski stopped six shots in the cage.

All told, the Tornados converted 16-of-21 clear attempts and scored 3-of-5 goals from free-position shots. A grand total of 10 goals were scored from the free position between the two sides.

Methodist's Alaijah Ward put in a free-position attempt before Collins' free-position shot was true, tying the contest at one goal apiece at the 24:41 mark in the first half. Nearly 10 minutes elapsed before the game's next goal - a Williams strike for the Monarchs. Vacchiano answered right back before Williams and Hannah Scharf traded scores, leaving the match in a 3-3 tie. Williams and Vacchiano traded goals to put the contest in a 4-4 tie before back-to-back goals from the Monarchs gave Methodist a 6-4 lead at the 6:41 mark in the first period.

That score would stand into the intermission before Kraemer's first goal of the afternoon closed the gap to a one-goal, 6-5 distance. Methodist scored the game's next five goals to extend its advantage, 11-5.

Kraemer took the contest over, scoring BC's next three strikes to cut Methodist's lead, 12-8. Collins backed Kraemer's scoring stretch up with a goal of her own, cutting the Monarch advantage to just three goals, 12-9.

Back-to-back Monarch scores pushed their lead to a five-goal, 14-9 margin with 8:49 left to play. The Tornados put together a late rally - as Kraemer put in consecutive goals - however, the late push was not enough as Methodist clinched the conference-opening victory, 14-11.

The Tornados are back in action tomorrow morning when BC squares off against Meredith College (1-4, 1-0 USAS) on Sunday at 11 a.m.
