BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College Tornados Women's Lacrosse team, led by fourth-year Head Coach Kristin Rosato and second-year Assistant Coach Tempestt Smith, were selected to finish seventh in the USA South on Wednesday afternoon after garnering 60 points in the poll.
Meredith College, under the direction of Head Coach Lauren Scott, was picked to win the 2019 USA South Athletic Conference women's lacrosse title in the preseason coaches poll. Last season, the Avenging Angels captured the program's third straight USA South regular season title and fifth consecutive conference tournament championship.
The USA South welcomed Brevard College and Pfeiffer University last season. These two institutions are currently reclassifying from NCAA Division II status but this year are included in the preseason poll and eligible for regular season championship honors. Brevard and Pfeiffer still will not be eligible for USA South or NCAA Tournament play until full DIII membership is established.
BC returns Micaiah Vacchiano and Hunter Denney offensively. Vacchiano finished 2018 with 19 goals, which ranked fourth on the team, while Denney's 13 goals ranked fifth. Junior Jezika Gunter finished 2018 second on the team with 60 draw controls. Vacchiano looks to helm BC's defensive attack, as her 19 caused turnovers in 2018 ranked third on the team.
Brevard opens it 2019 regular season this Saturday at Ives-Lemel Field as the Tornados face the NAIA's Brenau University. The action is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., following the men's home-opener against Birmingham-Southern at 12 p.m.
