BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College women's basketball team (1-4, 1-4 USAS) dropped the finale of a two-game weekend doubleheader to #15 Maryville College (8-0, 8-0 USAS), 78-50, on Saturday afternoon at the Boshamer Gymnasium.

Maryville used an impressive 29-of-53 (54.87%) mark from the field that included eight 3-pointers and an 85.7% mark from the free-throw line to sweep the Tornados.

Senior forward Deja Riddick led all BC scorers with 15 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field, while hauling down seven rebounds. Chyna Pouncey grabbed a game-best eight rebounds to go along with seven points, while seniors Bailey Ray and Destiny Williams also added seven points. Williams added six rebounds and a team-high three steals to her stat line in the contest.

Maryville was paced by a balanced attack that included four double-digit scorers. Courtney Carruthers led all Scots with a 15-point outing on 5-of-11 shooting, while Jordan Heifner and Shelby Hix added 13 points apiece. Kelley Wandell added 11 points, while Heifner snagged seven boards. On an afternoon when Maryville assisted on 23 of their 29 buckets, Hannah Seals (six assists) and Hicks (five assists) led the way.

Both teams struggled with turnovers, as Maryville committed 23 compared to BC's 22. The Scots were able to turn Brevard's 22 turnovers into 25 points-off-turnovers, and the visitors controlled the paint with 38 points down low. The Scots got out and ran in the contest, scoring 24 fastbreak points, while their balanced attack led to 32 points off the bench. The nationally-ranked Scots led beginning-to-end in the conference contest.

Maryville started off on a quick 9-1 scoring run that helped establish its early lead. BC cut the Scots' lead to five points after a Shakirah Thompson 3-pointer with 4:23 left in the first quarter, but that margin would prove to be as close as the Tornados would come. Maryville used a convincing 15-4 scoring stretch to end the quarter with a 29-13 lead.

The Scots started the second quarter on a similar 8-1 run before a Riddick layup made the score 37-16. The visitors took a 25-point, 48-23 lead into intermission.

Thompson began the second half for the Tornados with a 3-pointer before eight-consecutive points for the Scots. Trailing by a 30-point, 58-28 margin, the Tornados outscored Maryville 10-4 down the stretch in a third period that saw Brevard out-pace the Scots by a 15-14 margin. MC carried a 62-38 advantage into the final quarter of play.

Maryville established an 11-0 scoring stretch to kick off the fourth period that helped the Scots outscore Brevard 16-12 in the final quarter of play, wrapping up the conference victory for the visitors.

The Tornados are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, February 16, wrapping up a four-game homestand vs. Piedmont College at 6 p.m. at the Boshamer Gymnasium. Live video and statistics will be made available at youtube.com/BrevardCollegeTornados and bctornados.com.
