BREVARD, N.C. – Senior forward Deja Riddick put up a double-double as the Brevard College women's basketball team (0-2, 0-2 USAS) closed out a weekend USA South doubleheader, falling to the Covenant Scots (3-13, 2-6 USAS), 67-52 in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.

Riddick, a senior from Norfolk, Virginia, posted 15 points on 6-of-16 shooting in addition to grabbing 11 boards for her first double-double of the 2020-21 campaign. The senior added three assists and swiped four steals to lead Brevard defensively. Victoria Green (nine points) and Chyna Pouncey (eight points) contributed as reserves, while Kaitlyn Light added eight points on a pair of made 3-pointers. Pouncey led all subs with seven rebounds, while Avery Lockwood snagged six boards.

Covenant was led by a double-double performance of its own, as Destiny Mergilles poured in 18 points – including 10 free throws - and 10 rebounds to lead the Scots. Cosette Kirshch added 16 points, while Ruthie Moore posted a 10-point, nine-rebound showing.

The Scots knocked in 22-of-57 (38.6%) from the field compared to Brevard's 20-of-67 (29.9%), however, BC managed to make 10 shots from long distance compared to Covenant's six. The hosts made a habit of getting to the free-throw line, shooting 30 attempts from the charity stripe compared to Brevard's four. For the second consecutive contest, Covenant was able to outrebound the Tornados, 51-34, and controlled the paint with 26 points down low.

Brevard established an early lead, 8-2, thanks to a pair of long-range buckets from Riddick and Shakirah Thompson, however, the Scots were able to wipe out the advantage with a quick 9-0 scoring run. A 3-pointer from Light gave BC the lead back briefly, 13-11, but Covenant strung together a 10-0 run that extended to the 8:20 mark in the second period to hold a 21-13 advantage. The Scots took an eight-point lead, 32-24, into the halftime intermission.

Covenant went on a back-breaking 14-3 scoring stretch through the first six-plus minutes in the third period to stretch its lead out further. The Scots would take a 48-33 lead into the fourth quarter before a 15-3 scoring run pushed their lead to a 27-point margin. The Tornados finished the contest on a 13-1 scoring stretch as Covenant wrapped up the conference victory, 67-52.

The Tornados are scheduled to host Agnes Scott College on Tuesday, February 9 at 6 p.m. in Brevard's first home contest of the 2020-21 campaign at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
