LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Brevard College women's basketball team (0-1, 0-1 USAS) made its 2020-21 season debut on Friday evening, falling by a final of 68-38 to the Covenant Scots (2-13, 1-6 USAS) at the Barnes PE Center in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.

Avery Lockwood led all Tornados with 10 points offensively to go alongside eight rebounds. Deja Riddick hauled down 14 rebounds to go alongside nine points and six assists, while Bailey Ray added six points and six rebounds off the bench.

Covenant was led by Destiny Mergilles and Naomi Crumley, who each posted 17-point performances. Mergilles grabbed a team-best 12 rebounds, while Ruthie Moore added 11 boards.

The Tornados were making their season debut following several postponements in the month of January.

Covenant burst out to a 9-1 lead through the game's first six minutes before a Melvia Seymore 3-pointer halted the Scots' run. The Scots held a five-point advantage, 10-5, heading into the second period, where they used a 12-2 run to open up a 15-point advantage before taking a 28-14 lead into intermission.

The Tornados were able to bring the contest within nine points thanks to an 8-0 run capped off by an Avery Lockwood put-back layup with 2:30 left in the third quarter, however, the Scots extended their lead back to a 15-point margin, 46-31, heading into the final quarter of play. Covenant went on to outscore Brevard, 22-7, to finish off its first USA South Conference win of the season.
