BC Falls to Piedmont in Penultimate Game of Season

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College women's basketball team (8-15, 5-11 USAS) fell 76-48 on to visiting Piedmont (16-8, 12-3 USAS) on Wednesday night in the penultimate game of the 2019-20 season for the Tornados.

Brevard was led by junior forward Destiny Williams who recorded team-highs with 15 points and seven rebounds.  Senior center Krysta Davis added eight points, while point guard Ty'She Washington added seven.  Center Avery Lockwood came off the bench to score seven points to go along with five rebounds.

Piedmont's offensive production came mostly from Nakiyah Washington (20 pts) and Kyla Michienzi (17 pts) with Amari Price facilitating the scorers with eight assists.

The Lions led the contest from the opening tip, taking a 25-9 through the end of the first quarter.  Piedmont built on its lead even further, outscoring the Tornados 20-11 in the second period.

Following the intermission, Brevard played its best period of the night in the third.  The Tornados outscored Piedmont 15-12 in the period, led by Williams who scored seven of her 15 points in the quarter.  The Tornados also played improved defense against the Lions in the period, holding Piedmont to 4-of-12 shooting from the field and forcing six turnovers.

Piedmont outscored the Tornados however in the fourth quarter to pull away from the decisive victory.

BC struggled all night from the field, shooting just 30% from the contest and making only one three-pointer.  The free-throw line proved to be a major factor as well with the Lions shooting twice as many attempts by going 21-of-30 from the charity stripe compared to a 13-of-15 performance by the Tornados.

The game took place on Play4Kay night at the Boshamer Gymnasium.  The Play4Kay initiative honors Coach Kay Yow and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. For more information, go to www.kayyow.com

Brevard will close its 2019-20 campaign on Saturday, February 15 at home against Pfeiffer University at 2 p.m. at the Boshamer Gymnasium. The matchup will serve as BC's Senior Day, where the Tornados will honor their two seniors – Krysta Davis and Elaina Perez.

Saturday's contest will also mark Brevard's #BlockOutCancer game, as the Tornados women's basketball squad partners up with all USA South schools in support of Greensboro College Head Coach Randy Tuggle in his fight against Pancreatic Cancer. Both teams will join up pre-game in #BlockOutCancer t-shirts to show that they are #TuggleStrong. For more information about the USA South's #BlockOutCancer initiative, please click here.
