Balanced Tornados Take 54-39 Victory against Bob Jones

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Brevard College women's basketball team (7-13) led wire-to-wire en route to a 54-39 victory over Bob Jones University (10-10), as the Tornados clinched a season sweep over the host Bruins on Tuesday evening in Greenville, South Carolina.

Ty'She Washington led all Tornado scorers with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field. The junior from Charlotte, North Carolina hit a pair of free throws and drained a 3-pointer in Tuesday's matchup. 

Junior forwards Deja Riddick and Destiny Williams each scored seven points and grabbed three rebounds, while Victoria Green and Shakirah Thompson each hit a pair of 3-pointers to total six points apiece. Thompson grabbed a team-best five rebounds in the contest as well. 

Bob Jones was paced by Gracen Ledford and Rachel Clark, who scored 12 and 10 points respectively. Ledford added four rebounds and two steals to her effort. 

Brevard shot a 38.5% mark from the field compared to Bob Jones' 26.7% total. The Tornados made seven 3-pointers to BJU's two and held advantages in rebounds (29-26) and assists (10-2). BC forced 25 turnovers and capitalized with 12 points-off-turnovers, while the Tornado bench contributed heavily to the victory with 21 bench points. 

Thompson opened the scoring with a 3-pointer at the 9:11 mark in the first quarter, and the Tornados never trailed from that point on. Both sides battled tightly through the first half before BC used a 12-2 scoring run through the first portion of the second quarter to extend its lead to double-digits, 22-12, with 5:07 left to play in the second frame. The Bruins clawed back and cut BC's lead to four points, 25-21 before the Tornados ended the half on a 5-0 scoring run to take a nine-point, 30-21 advantage at the intermission. 

The Tornados were able to control action in the third period, holding as big of a lead as 16 points at 41-25. BC extended its lead to a 20-point margin before clinching the victory and the season sweep, 54-39. 

The Tornados will wrap up their four-game road swing with a pair of weekend matchups in the state of Georgia. Brevard first meets Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia on Friday, February 7 at 6 p.m. before heading up to Lookout Mountain, Georgia on Saturday, February 8 to face Covenant College at 2 p.m.
