Lockwood Secures All-Conference Third Team as Tornados Conclude Successful Run at USA South Championships

BEREA, Ky. - Junior thrower Avery Lockwood secured a spot on the USA South Women's Track & Field All-Conference Third Team to highlight a successful showing for Brevard College at the 2021 USA South Conference Track & Field Championships on Wednesday and Thursday in Berea, Kentucky. 

Lockwood, a native of Foxworth, Mississippi, took home podium honors in the Women's Shot Put with a final distance of 10.79m to finish third in the event. 

Kelia Oliver, a sophomore thrower from Murphy, North Carolina, set a new program record in Women's Discus with a 32.49m attempt that was good enough for a sixth-place finish. On the men's throwing side, Ari Drake set a new BC DIII-era high with an 11.21m result that placed him in fifth. Drake was followed by senior Gabriel Covington in the event, who placed sixth at 11.15m. Evan McAdams (8th, 10.49m) and Ernest Smith II (10th, 10.08m) rounded out the event for the Tornados as Brevard claimed four top-10 spots.

Covington led all Tornados in the Men's Discus Throw on Wednesday, finishing just outside the top-three in fourth with a 32.53m attempt. McAdams placed sixth in the event with a 29.66m try. 

George Wells finished top-10 for the Tornados with a sixth-place result in the Men's 800-Meter Run in a time of 2:04.23. Wells PR'd in the 1500-Meter Run, finishing fourth with a final time of 3:04.90, while Devon Brodmyer cracked the top-10 with a ninth-place result, 3:10.56. Garrett Spangler (6th, 16:06.2) and Brodmyer (10th, 16:21.85) turned in top-10 results for the Tornados in the Men's 5000-Meter Run. 

As a team, the Tornados finished seventh on the men's side with 28 total points and 10th on the women's side. 

Following the conclusion of the meet, BC's Covington and Shakirah Thompson were selected as Brevard's representatives on the conference's All-Sportsmanship Team.
