Oglethorpe Uses Big Second Half to Push Past Brevard in Atlanta

ATLANTA – The Brevard College men's lacrosse team (0-1) made its season debut on Friday night in Atlanta, falling to Oglethorpe University (1-2) by a final of 10-3.

The Stormy Petrels used seven unanswered second half goals to earn their first victory of the season.

Senior attacker Sam Duffie scored three goals to pace BC's attack on the evening. Duffie, a native of Columbia, South Carolina, struck for a pair of early goals in the first quarter before adding his third score in the second period. Junior attacker Evan Francois dished out an assist to Duffie, while junior midfielder Nate Ellen won nine faceoffs and snagged a team-high six ground balls. Starting goalkeeper Devin McCarragher (0-1) stopped a career-best 15 shots between the pipes for Brevard.

Friday's contest marked the first for BC men's lacrosse since April 20, 2019 – a period of 678 days between competitions for the Tornados.

Oglethorpe was led offensively by Quade Bedgood, who scored three goals. Max Brand, Brian Green, and Jazz Washington each put a pair of shots into the back of the net, while Addison Irwin (1-2) stopped 16 shots.

The hosts held a 46-32 advantage in shots while going 22-for-24 on clear attempts, forcing 28 turnovers, and scooping 31 ground balls. BC held a 9-8 advantage on faceoffs while going 17-for-28 on clears. Neither team was able to find the back of the net on the power play.

The Stormy Petrels struck first, scoring 19 seconds into the contest to take the early 1-0 advantage. Nine scoreless minutes was broken as Duffie found the back of the nylon with 5:32 left, tying the contest up at one goal apiece. Just 30 seconds later, the Tornado senior put a Francois pass past Oglethorpe's keeper, giving BC its first lead of the contest, 2-1, heading into the second period.

Just over a minute into the second quarter of play, Duffie scored his third goal of the evening to extend Brevard's lead to a 3-1 margin. The goal was quickly answered by Oglethorpe's Washington, cutting the deficit to a one-goal mark.

Bedgood knotted the contest up at 3-3 with 7:42 left in the first half, a score that would hold until the halftime intermission as the two sides were knotted up at the break.

Within the first three minutes of the third period, Oglethorpe tallied three goals to retake the lead, 6-3. The Stormy Petrels added a goal towards the end of the stanza, making the score 7-3 heading into the final quarter of play.

A pair of goals from Brand in addition to Washington's second goal of the contest helped wrap up the victory for the Stormy Petrels, 10-3.

Brevard continues its non-conference slate on Friday, March 5, as the Tornados trek to Danville, Virginia to take on fellow USA South member Averett University (3-1) at 3 p.m.
