BC Splits Pair of USA South Conference Matches

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Brevard College volleyball team (4-20, 2-13 USAS) split a pair of USA Conference neutral-site contests at a league quad-match event on Saturday on the campus of Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, North Carolina.  Brevard defeated Mary Baldwin (2-26, 1-13 USAS) in straight sets, then fell 3-0 to Southern Virginia (27-1, 14-1 USAS).

Brevard 3, Mary Baldwin 0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-21)

BC earned its second straight-set victory of the season with an impressive opening win Saturday to start the day.

The Tornados were led on the attack by junior Makenna Parkins who registered 13 kills and a kill percentage of .407.  Junior Kaitlyn Pressley led all players with 21 assists to go along with eight kills.  Defensively, libero Bailey Lance led the way with a game-high 14 digs.

Logan Priddy added 10 assists while serving for three aces.  As a team, Brevard recorded seven aces over the three sets with service winners also from Lance, Kendall Rockstad, Ashley Hoxit, and senior Grace Pukas.

Up 21-20 in the first set, Brevard rattled off four straight points with the set winner coming on a kill by Jaxson Tumicki off a Pressley assist.  Ahead 1-0 in sets, BC then put together a dominant second set after opening up a 20-7 lead behind the service of Lance.  The third set was a tight affair with the two teams tied at 21-21.  With a chance to finish the match, the Tornados delivered four consecutive points again, with Lance serving for the match-winner.

Southern Virginia 3, Brevard 0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-18)

The Tornados faced off against the leader in the USA South Conference standings Southern Virginia in BC's final match of the day.

Parkins again led BC with 11 kills, while Pressley distributed 16 assists.  Priddy added eight assists and four digs, while Hoxit produced six kills.  Lance registered a team-high 10 digs.

Southern Virginia jumped out to a 2-0 lead in sets with a 25-18 victory in the opener followed by a 25-14 win in set two.

Brevard contended with the conference leaders for much of the third set as back-to-back kills by Parkins cut the deficit to 14-12.  However, SVU proved too tough down the stretch by winning 11 of the final 17 points to take the match victory.

Brevard will play its final week of the season away from home beginning with a conference match at Salem on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  The Tornados will then conclude their regular season at a USA South quad-match on Saturday, October 29 with tilts vs. host N.C. Wesleyan and Methodist.
