Tornados Fall Just Short in Five-Setter Followed by Four-Setter in Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Brevard College volleyball team (2-16, 0-9 USAS) came up just short, dropping a five-set match to N.C. Wesleyan (6-10, 2-4 USAS) followed by a four-set defeat to Methodist (9-10, 4-5 USAS) on Saturday at a USA South Conference quad-match hosted by Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista, Virginia.

Match 1 - N.C. Wesleyan 3, Brevard 2

In the first of two neutral-site conference competitions for the Tornados, Brevard and N.C. Wesleyan fought to a fifth set with the Battling Bishops winning the decisive set 15-9 to take the match.

NCWU won the first set 25-18 before Brevard evened the match with a 25-21 second set victory.  BC then went on two take a 2-1 lead with its second consecutive set win, 25-17.  The Battling Bishops however came back with a 25-22 answer in set four to force a final stanza.

Junior Makenna Parkins led the Tornados on the attacking end with 16 kills.  Sophomore Ashley Hoxit was effective both offensively (10 kills, 2 aces) and defensively (17 digs, 1 block).  Blair Nance registered 12 kills to add to the attack.

Libero Bailey Lance recorded a team-high 27 digs to go along with four service aces.  Setter Logan Priddy also delivered with four aces to go along with a game-high 36 assists.

BC won the second set with a late flurry that began with a Hoxit kill to break a 21-21 deadlock and earn a service opportunity, Brevard clinched the set with back-to-back kills by Nance capped off by a service ace by Hoxit.

The third set was tied 15-15 before the Tornados took 10 of the final 12 points in the stanza.  The scoring came off the services of Lance and Priddy with Nance hitting the set-winning kill.

NCWU pulled away late in the fourth set. Tied 2-2, the Battling Bishops jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the fifth set en route to the match win.

Match 2 - Methodist 3, Brevard 1

In the second match of the day for Brevard, the Tornados won the second set 25-23 to tie the match 1-1 heading into set three.  Methodist however would win each of the next two frames to take the four-set victory.

Three Tornados - Hoxit (14), Lance (12), and Priddy (11) - registered double-digit assists to lead BC defensively.  Priddy led the team with 19 assists, while Ashley Baumann added 10 assists.  Parkins was once again BC's leading attacker with nine kills, while Jaxson Tumicki added seven winners.  Lance led the way in the service department with four aces.

After Methodist won the first set 25-16, the Tornados and Monarchs battled back and forth in set two.  Priddy set up Parkins for the set-winning point as Brevard tied the match.

The Monarchs however took the third set 25-14, then used a 10-0 run to close out the fourth and final set to take the match.

Brevard returns to USA South Conference play with a midweek trip to Misenheimer, North Carolina to take on host Pfeiffer University on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
