Tornados Open Play at Meredith College Tournament

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Brevard College volleyball team (2-2) opened play at the Meredith College / William Peace University crossover tournament held in Raleigh, North Carolina on Friday afternoon. The Tornados were able to win a set in both matches but fell 3-1 to former USA South Conference foe Maryville College and host Meredith.

MARYVILLE 3, BREVARD 1

Junior right-side hitter Kaitlyn Pressley totaled her second double-digit kill outing of the young season, tallying a team-high 11 kills while also recording seven digs and six assists. Sophomore setter Logan Priddy added 12 assists while Bailey Lance racked up 11 digs defensively.

Maryville's offense was led by Landry Frisch, who matched Pressley's 11-kill mark. Meredith Boone dished out 31 assists to facilitate the Scots' attack.

The Scots used efficient hitting in the first (.278), second (.364), and fourth (.304) sets to propel themselves to victory in the tournament-opening match. Maryville won the first and second sets by identical scores, 25-16, before the Tornados took a thrilling third set, 27-25. Down 19-14 late in the third set, the Tornados battled back to tie the set up at 24-24 before using three-consecutive points capped by a Pressley kill to clinch the third set win. The Scots were able to rebound in the fourth set, earning the match with a 25-12 win in the final set.

MEREDITH 3, BREVARD 1

Pressley turned in her second 20-kill performance of the early season, totaling 20 kills with 11 assists for her second double-double of the year. Ashley Hoxit, Blair Nance, and Makenna Parkins added seven kills each offensively, while Priddy dished out 22 assists. Lance once again anchored the defense with 12 digs.

Meredith had three players reach double-figure kill totals, with Emma Duncan leading the way with 16 followed by Lauren Bissette's 12 and Hailey Long's 11. Lillie Davis added 46 assists.

The hosts took a 25-18 decision in the first set before both sides took part in a wild second set that included 58 combined points, as BC took a well-deserved second set victory 30-28. BC was able to extend its lead to as many as seven points in the set, 21-14, and earned match point five times before Meredith tied the score, 24-24. The two sides went back and forth until a Meredith service error and attacking error gave the Tornados a marathon win, 30-28.

The third set was tightly-contested throughout, but the hosts pulled away for a 25-21 victory before dominating set number four 25-9 to earn a 3-1 match win.

The Tornados conclude their four-match run in the tournament on Saturday, facing Berea College at 10 a.m. before a 2 p.m. first serve against Bridgewater College.
