BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College volleyball team (2-6, 2-4 USAS) honored its two seniors, Madison Hogan and Raley Shirey, on Thursday evening at the Boshamer Gymnasium.

Brevard fell, 3-0, to visiting Berea College, as the Mountaineers took sets one and two - 25-14 and 25-16 – before a tight third set went the way of Berea, 25-22.

Freshman duo Makenna Parkins and Kaitlyn Pressley each recorded double-doubles in the defeat. Parkins led all Tornados with 11 kills to go alongside a team-high 14 digs defensively. Pressley dished out 21 of Brevard's 23 assists while adding 11 digs on the defensive end.

BC's senior class had an impact on the stat sheet as well. Shirey, a middle-hitter from Forsyth County, Georgia, recorded nine kills in her final home contest at The Bosh. Hogan, a senior defensive specialist from Concord, North Carolina, logged seven digs while serving as starting libero for the Tornados.

Berea's Deanna de la Torre led all players with 12 kills, tallying a double-double with 12 digs as well. Adrienne Roberts led all players with 28 assists in the conference match.

Both sides traded points through the early stages of the first set before a six-point run left the Mountaineers with a nine-point, 19-10 lead before clinching the set, 25-14.

In set number two, the Mountaineers jumped out the early advantage, scoring 11 of the first 14 points. Brevard battled back, using a service error, ace, and three-straight kills by Shirey and Parkins to cut the deficit to four points, 18-14. However, Berea pulled away for the 25-16 victory down the stretch in the second set.

Brevard and Berea battled through a tightly-contested third set where there were 11 ties and three lead changes. The Tornados held early leads through the set's first 20 points before a 4-0 Mountaineer scoring stretch gave Berea a 13-10 advantage. Brevard battled back, taking a 14-13 advantage before a late five-point run helped the Mountaineers complete the sweep.

The Tornados are scheduled to conclude their Spring 2021 season on the road in Macon, Georgia against Wesleyan College on Saturday at 3 and 5 p.m.
