Volleyball Hosts Lions in Doubleheader at The Bosh Wednesday

BREVARD, N.C. – On the heels of its first road trip of the Spring 2021 season, the Brevard College volleyball team (1-2, 1-1 USAS) returns to the confines of the Boshamer Gymnasium on Wednesday evening, welcoming Piedmont College (2-2, 1-1 USAS) to town for a 5 p.m. serve time in a conference matchup. The two sides will then face off in non-conference action shortly following the end of the first match at approximately 7:30 p.m.

In an abundance of caution due to the COVID-19 pandemic, spectators will not be permitted to attend volleyball games this season.  Members of participating teams, game officials, media, and other essential personnel relevant to event operations will be the only individuals permitted into the venue for 2021 volleyball games. The policy is in accordance with the USA South Conference's policy announced on January 7, 2021.

The Tornados last saw action last Saturday in Montgomery, falling 3-0 in a conference match vs. Huntingdon before a straight-set defeat in a non-conference contest.

Freshman setter Kaitlyn Pressley led the Tornados with seven assists, three kills, four digs and two service aces in the first match. Pressley followed that performance with 16 assists, seven digs and an ace in the second contest.

Senior Raley Shirey registered a team-high six kills in the first competition, while junior Brook Groves and freshman Makenna Parkins each had five kills to lead the Tornado attack in match two.

BC opened Spring 2021 with a sweep over Agnes Scott College, 3-0, on Saturday, March 6 at The Bosh in its first home contest. Shirey, a senior from Forsyth County, Georgia, tallied a career-high 11 kills on 19 total attacks for a .526 kill percentage that led the Tornado offensive effort. Parkins added six kills in her Tornado volleyball debut, while Sarah Hutchens recorded five kills.

Pressley, a local from Brevard and a graduate of Brevard High School, dished out 15 assists while also adding nine digs and three kills in an all-around performance for her Tornado debut. Returning sophomore Grace Pukas added eight assists, while freshman Caitlin Hagarty posted a game-high 15 digs in her first collegiate contest.

Piedmont has gone 2-2 through its first four matches of the season, claiming a doubleheader sweep over Wesleyan before falling, 3-0, 3-0, in both matches at LaGrange.

BC continues its homestand on Sunday when the Tornados meet LaGrange at 3 and 5:30 p.m. The Tornados and Panthers will play in a conference match first before taking part in a three-set exhibition match.
