Nado Newcomer Spotlight: Volleyball Welcomes 8 to 2020-21 Squad

 

 

BREVARD, N.C. – Throughout the Fall of 2020, the Brevard College Department of Athletics will be highlighting the new faces in the BC Tornado family, welcoming the freshman and newcomer student-athletes who will be joining Tornado teams during the 2020-21 athletic seasons.

Next up in this series is the BC Volleyball team, under the direction of Head Coach Anna Grant and Assistant Coach Kia Kaufman. The Tornados will welcome a total of 8 freshman student-athletes to its team this upcoming season.

"This class has done an excellent job so far this fall," said Anna Grant, Brevard College Head Volleyball Coach. "They have brought in to our culture and I'm looking forward to seeing what else they bring to the program as we continue our off season training."

The Tornados will look to build upon its 2019 season in which BC earned 2 victories and went 2-12 in USA South Conference play.

 

Abbey Duncan- Freshman- Setter- Finksburg, Md. - Carroll Christian High School

The Finksburg, Maryland native helped Carroll Christian High School to a JV county championship her freshman year and was selected as a MACSAC All-Conference Second Team and All-Tournament Team en route to a MACSAC Conference Championship her sophomore campaign. Duncan's junior year accomplishments included a Maryland School of the Deaf Oriole Classic All-Tournament Award, Carroll County All-County Second Team (only private school honoree on the team), Co-Most Valuable Player for Carroll Christian, MACSAC All-Star Team, NACA All-Tournament Award, MACSAC Conference Champion, and MACSAC All-Tournament Award. She capped off her high school career with a Carroll Christian Co-MVP Award, a MACSAC All-Star Team selection, NACA All-Tournament honor, a D1 MACSAC Championship, and selections onto the MACSAC All-Conference First Team and All-Tournament Team. Academically, Duncan made Honor Roll all four years of high school and graduated Summa Cum Laude with an Honors College Preparatory Diploma. Duncan will be a Business and Organizational Leadership and Wilderness Leadership Experiential Education major at Brevard College.

 

 

Caitlin Hagarty- Freshman- Defensive Specialist- Raleigh, N.C. - Rolesville High School

The Raleigh, North Carolina native earned the Coaches' Award for Rolesville High School. She served as a member of the Pride Club, the Photography Club, and the Forensic Science Club. Hagarty will be a Criminal Justice major with an Art minor at Brevard College.

Hope Hamilton- Freshman- Defensive Specialist/Setter- Bluffton, S.C. - John Paul II Catholic School

The Bluffton, South Carolina native earned Maritime Center Student of the Year and Salve Regina University Reader's Award honors. Hamilton was involved with school plays and concert choir at John Paul II Catholic School. Hamilton will be an English Education major at Brevard College.

Tayla Hutchings- Sophomore- Outside Hitter/Middle Blocker- Silver Lake, N.H. - Kennett High School (Bay Path University)

The Silver Lake, New Hampshire native earned the "Calm of the Storm" award and made the Honor Roll. Hutchings attended Bay Path University during her freshman year and played volleyball, earning a team award. Hutchings will be a Criminal Justice major at Brevard College.

Caelyn Murphy- Freshman- Outside Hitter- Monroe, N.C. - Sun Valley High School

The Monroe, North Carolina native was selected as the Most Valuable Player her junior varsity team in 2017 and SCC All-conference Honorable Mention in 2019. Academically, Murphy was a member of the National Technical Honor Society and graduated in the top third of her graduating class. Murphy was the sitting Vice President of the Future Farmers of America and served as the President of the Inter Club Council.

Makenna Parkins- Freshman- Outside Hitter- Marion, N.C. - McDowell High School

The Marion, North Carolina native was the Head Captain for two years for both McDowell High School's Volleyball and Women's Basketball teams. She was an All-Conference selection two times in both Basketball and Volleyball and earned All-Tournament team honors in consecutive years and was selected to the Blue-White All Star game in Basketball. Parkins broke two McDowell High School records and ranked third in her conference in kills in Volleyball. Academically, Parkins was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated in the top 3% of her class. Off the court, Parkins was a member of the Relay for Life Club and was a Tutor. Parkins will be a two sport athlete, participating in Volleyball and Basketball at Brevard College and will major in Exercise Science.

Kaitlyn Pressley- Freshman- Setter/Rightside Hitter- Brevard, N.C. - Brevard High School

The Brevard, North Carolina native was a three-year varsity letter at Brevard High School and was named to the Mountain Six All-Conference team in 2018 and 2019. She surpassed the 1,000 assist milestone at Brevard High School and earned the Varsity Volleyball Leadership award in 2019. Pressley was named to the Mountain Six Conference All- Tournament Team in 2019 and selected to the Hendersonville Times-News All-Area Team in 2018 and 2019. Pressley was picked as an Asheville Citizens-Times Western North Carolina Second Team honoree in 2019 and an honorable mention in 2018. She was awarded with the Xcel Volleyball Performance SAVL All-Region Second Team in 2018. Academically, Pressley was selected as a Transylvania County Scholar her sophomore and junior year and was a member of the National Technical Honor Society her senior year. She was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Health Occupations of America. Pressley will be a Health Science major at Brevard College.

Holly Roe- Freshman- Outside Hitter/Defensive Specialist- Murrells Inlet, S.C. - Waccamaw High School

The Murrells Inlet, South Carolina served as the team captain of her varsity team for two years. Academically, Roe was a member of the National Honors Society. Roe will be a Criminal Justice major at Brevard College.
