BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College women's tennis team (2-3) opened the spring portion of its 2020 schedule with a dominant 9-0 sweep of Spartanburg Methodist College (0-7) and fell 8-1 to NCAA DII Southern Wesleyan University (1-0) in an action-packed doubleheader at the McCoy Tennis Complex.

The first match was controlled from start to finish by the Tornados, winning seven played matches and claiming a pair of decisions by default against the short-handed Pioneers.

The number-one doubles match saw senior standout Samantha Sepe paired for the first time in collegiate action with sophomore newcomer Lily Farr. The duo cruised to an 8-1 decision. Freshman Hamrick Perry was paired with junior Margaret Correll in the number-two spot, as the pair of Tornados claimed an 8-2 decision over SMC's Gracie Pall and Joana Londono. The third doubles spot was decided by default, as the Tornados held an early 3-0 overall match lead.

Freshman Alli Kogoy was slotted into the number-one spot to face SMC's top player Madeline Turner. Kogoy controlled the match and glided to a straight-set victory, 6-1, 6-2.

Jen Cox defeated Molly Lawson in number-two singles, 6-4, 6-1, while Mekenzie Bowman and Brooke Garland each earned straight-set victories, 6-2, 6-2, in numbers three and four singles, respectively. Carmen Boone dominated in the number-five singles spot, 6-0, 6-0, while the no. 6 slot was decided by default, boosting the Tornados to the 9-0 team victory.

The Tornados donned special purple shirts during Saturday's first match in support of the "P.S., I Love You Day" initiative, supporting mental health awareness.

Brevard then took the courts against NCAA DII member institution Southern Wesleyan, as the visiting Warriors took the 8-1 victory.

Sepe claimed the Tornados' only point in the contest, as the Niceville, Florida native earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over SWU's number-one singles player Iva Jankovic.

The Tornados will return to action on Saturday, February 29 when Brevard hosts Pfeiffer University in a rematch of an 8-1 victory on September 29, 2019.
