BREVARD, N.C. - Junior forward Grace Black scored a goal in the 18th minute, as the Brevard College women's soccer team (8-4-4, 1-2-3 USA South) earned its first conference win of the season, shutting out Salem College (5-8-1, 1-4-1 USAS) 1-0 on Wednesday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field. 

Black, a junior from Charleston, South Carolina, scored her sixth goal of the season on a fastbreak goal that was started by junior forward Abby Mayer, who played a through ball to Black down the right side. Black took it and fired a shot into the upper 90 past the Salem keeper to give Brevard all the offense that it would need in the contest.

Nicole Arroyo (4-2-2) earned her fourth win and fifth shutout of her freshman season, as the Yulee, Florida product made five saves to protect the slim 1-0 lead for Brevard. 

As a team, the Tornados outshot the Spirits 20-7, with nine total shots on target for the home side. BC accumulated 15 of its 20 shot attempts in the second half as the Tornados looked to double their advantage. Brevard took nine corner kicks to Salem's three. 

Black led all Tornados with six shot attempts, as two were on target. Mayer took four shots, while Olivia Guillermo, Hayley Kenney, Taylor Richardson, and Mikayla Zvekan took two shots apiece to keep the pressure on the Spirit defense. 

Salem's Darilyn Nieto, who is tied for the USA South lead in goals this season (12), took three shot attempts. Jordan Tomberlin played between the sticks in the second half for the Spirits, making five saves without allowing a goal. 

The Tornados hit the road this weekend to take on Mary Baldwin University in Staunton, Virginia at 1 p.m. on Saturday in conference action.
