Winning Streak Snapped in Close Loss for Tornados

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Brevard College women's soccer team (4-2) fell 1-0 to Carolina University (4-3) on Sunday afternoon at Truist Field in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The defeat halted a four-match win streak for the Tornados in which they outscored the opposition 14-0.

Junior forward Abby Mayer led all Brevard players with three shot attempts, including two on target. Izzy Hagen, Taylor Richardson, and Aliyah Vaughan also all took shot attempts for Brevard. Freshman goalkeeper Nicole Arroyo (2-1) made one save while facing nine shots on the day.

The Bruins were paced by a 10th minute goal from Aaliyah Rubio - her fourth of the season - on an assist by Avilene Arellano Ordaz that broke up a 385 minute scoreless stretch for the Brevard defense. The Bruins were able to hold on to their slim lead through the remainder of the contest.

Mayer took a shot in the fifth minute that was turned away by the Bruins before Carolina Univ. was able to score at the 10-minute mark. Mayer and Vaughan both took shots off the mark before Richardson had a shot hit the post. Hagen forced a Bruin save just before halftime as the hosts held on to their 1-0 lead.

Mayer forced a Bruin save in the 68th minute, but that attempt would prove to be Brevard's lone chance at goal in the second half as the Bruins held on for the slim victory.

Brevard continues a season-long five-match road swing on Wednesday, September 21 as the Tornados travel to Toccoa, Georgia to face Toccoa Falls College at 4 p.m.
