BREVARD, N.C. – Brevard College's Taylor Richardson and Rebeccah Rojas earned USA South Conference weekly awards following their performances in Saturday's 1-0 triumph over Covenant College at Ives-Lemel Family Field in BC's season opener. Richardson was selected as the USA South Conference Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week, while Rojas took home USA South Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week honors.
The selections become the first conference honors for Brevard College student-athletes in the 2020-21 athletics season.
Rojas, a senior goalkeeper from Murrieta, California, recorded three saves to seal the 21st victory of her collegiate career in-goal for the Tornados. The award marks the fourth time that Rojas has earned a Defensive Player of the Week selection in her Tornado career. Currently, Rojas holds BC NCAA-era single-season records for lowest goals-against average (1.01, 2019), save percentage (.859, 2019), wins (nine, 2017), and shutouts (six). The senior also holds career records in lowest goals-against average (1.14), wins (21), and clean sheets (17).
Richardson, a freshman forward from Seminole, Florida, scored BC's game-winning goal in the 53rd minute on a header that came via a corner kick from teammate Abbie Petrosky to earn the selection as Rookie of the Week. The goal, which is the first of Richardson's career, came in her first official collegiate contest.
The Tornados are scheduled to travel to Maryville, Tennessee for a mid-week matchup against Maryville College on Wednesday. February 17 at 6 p.m. before returning home on Sunday, February 21 to face Berea College at 1 p.m.
