FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Brevard College women's basketball team (14-8, 11-5 USAS) earned a hard-fought road win 64-57 over host Methodist (13-9, 9-7 USAS) on Saturday afternoon in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The win snapped a four-game losing skid for Brevard which remains in the top four of the latest USA South Conference standings.
Freshman Makayla Street scored 17 points in 23 minutes off the bench to go along with seven rebounds. Street sank a career-high nine free throws in ten attempts en route to her eighth double-digit scoring output of the season.
Sophomore center Naliyah Boyce scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. The performance marked the third straight game in double-figures scoring for the native of Marion, North Carolina.
Junior Makenna Parkins also hit 9-of-10 free throw attempts en route to 11 points, while pulling down five rebounds and blocking two shots. Sophomore Alexis Marshall scored eight points to mark her career-high in a Tornado uniform.
Brevard trailed 5-2 early after the opening tip, then went on a 7-0 scoring run to take the lead midway through the first quarter. BC went on to finish the first quarter on another 7-0 run to stake an 18-9 advantage after the opening stanza. Boyce led the way with a dominant first quarter, scoring eight points on 4-of-5 shooting and pulling down four rebounds in the period.
Methodist responded by outscoring BC 15-12 in the second quarter to cut the deficit to six points heading to intermission. The Monarchs then opened the second half on an 8-2 run to tie the game 32-32 with just under seven minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Brevard took a 47-44 lead into the final period as the two teams battled down the stretch. Methodist took a 51-50 lead with 5:53 to play to take its first lead since the opening minutes of the contest.
The Tornados responded with a critical performance in the final minutes, outscoring the Monarchs 13-6 until the final buzzer. A made jumper by guard Lexi Shepard followed by a 3-pointer from junior Chyna Pouncey ignited the run which was aided by several made free throws down the stretch. Meanwhile, BC locked down Methodist on the defensive end as the Monarchs missed ten of their final 11 field goal attempts in the contest.
For the game, BC outshot MU 39% to 29% from the field. Both teams took an abundance of trips to the charity stripe, with Brevard capitalizing on a season-high 25-of-30 (71%) free throw attempts. Methodist meanwhile went 16-of-28 (57%) from the line. Neither team was effective from beyond the arc with just three made 3-pointers between the two teams.
Brevard will return to action with its regular season home finale on Wednesday vs. Greensboro which sits atop the USA South Conference standings. The contest is set for a 7 p.m. tipoff at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
