Tornados Fall in Overtime Thriller to Knights, 81-79

BUENA VISTA, Va. - Despite a spirited comeback effort in the fourth quarter that sent the game to overtime, the Brevard College women's basketball team (13-5, 10-2 USAS) fell in a thrilling contest to Southern Virginia University (9-9, 93 USAS) 81-79 on Saturday evening in Buena Vista, Virginia. 

Junior forward Makenna Parkins scored a season-best 23 points on 10 made field goals with 12 rebounds, as five different Tornados reached double-digit scoring totals. 

Freshman forward Olivia Miller poured in 15 points off the bench, while Chyna Pouncey registered her first-career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore point guard Lexi Shepard added 14 points with three assists, and reigning USA South Rookie of the Week Makayla Street turned in an 11-point performance. 

SVU was led by Addison Newman, who scored 21 points while Presley Heggie hit three 3-pointers. 

The Tornados were able to outshoot the Knights 45% to 36% from the field, but SVU held a 7-1 advantage on made 3-pointers. The Knights attempted 33 free throws to Brevard's 16, but BC out rebounded SVU 45-36. Each side committed more than 20 turnovers, with Brevard losing possession 26 times to the hosts' 21 miscues. Southern Virginia was able to capitalize on Brevard's turnovers, turning them into 36 points-off-turnovers. BC dominated the painted area, scoring a whopping 56 points in the paint. 

Brevard gears up for a busy slate of conference contests next week as the Tornados travel to Misenheimer, North Carolina to take on Pfeiffer on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
