Tornados Outlast Fighting Squirrels at Home, 63-46

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College women's basketball team (10-4, 7-1 USA South) outlasted Mary Baldwin University (1-13, 1-6 USAS), 63-46, on Friday evening at the Boshamer Gymnasium for BC's seventh win in USA South play in eight tries.

Junior guard Calli Wells and freshman guard Makayla Street led the way for the Tornados off the bench, scoring a combined 31 of BC's 63 total points in the victory. Wells scored 17 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the field with a team-best three made 3-pointers. Wells also contributed on the defensive end with six rebounds and three steals. Street added 14 points on an efficient 7-of-12 mark from the field while also snagging four boards and totaling a team-high four steals.

Junior forward Makenna Parkins led the starters with seven points and grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds, while Olivia Miller scored six points with four rebounds and three assists. Naliyah Boyce anchored the reserve unit on the glass with eight rebounds.

Mary Baldwin was paced by A'Cetta Farrait, who totaled a game-high 18 points with seven rebounds. Imari Knight also scored double figures with 11 points to go alongside 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Mekayla Clark scored nine points, grabbed eight boards, and had a game-high five steals.

Each side shot in the low 30% range from the field, with BC making four 3-point buckets. The Tornados controlled the battle on the glass 51-38 and dished out 17 assists, while Brevard also forced 26 turnovers from a shorthanded Mary Baldwin side that led to 25 points-off-turnovers. BC's bench was the story of the game, scoring 44 of Brevard's 63 points in the contest.

The Tornados were able to lead for a heavy majority of the bout, with the score only tied three total times early in the contest. Tight play in the first half allowed Mary Baldwin to keep the game within single digits for much of the first stanza.

With the score tied 6-6 midway through the first period, Brevard went on a 9-2 run capped by Shania Houser's layup to take a 15-8 margin into the second quarter.

Mary Baldwin held firm in the second period, outscoring Brevard 15-14 to cut the deficit to six points, 29-23, as the halftime intermission took place.

Brevard was able to put its foot on the gas in the third quarter, outscoring the Fighting Squirrels 22-5 in the period to open up a dominant 23-point margin, 51-28. Wells led the way with seven points in the period, while Parkins scored five and the freshman duo of Miller and Street added four.

The Tornados were able to cruise from that point forward, allowing their depth to take over as Brevard earned its seventh conference victory of 2022-23, 63-46.

Brevard turns right back around tomorrow for a USA South showdown against Southern Virginia University at home, with tipoff slated for 4 p.m.
