Hot Start Propels Tornados to 82-58 Win over Pacers; 4-0 Start for BC in USA South Action

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College women's basketball team (7-3, 4-0 USA South) closed out the 2022 calendar year with a resounding 82-58 triumph over William Peace University (1-4, 0-2 USAS) on Saturday afternoon in BC's Christmas-themed contest. 

The Tornados are now owners of a 7-3 record through the first 10 games of the 2022-23 season, while maintaining their perfect 4-0 start in conference play. 

Junior forward Makenna Parkins led all Tornados with 18 points on a highly-efficient 7-of-9 mark from the field in just 19 minutes of game time. Junior guard Calli Wells added 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting with a perfect 4-for-4 mark at the charity stripe, while also grabbing five rebounds. Makayla Street, a freshman guard and reigning USA South Rookie of the Week, added 12 points and swiped three steals, while Naliyah Boyce posted a double-double of 11 points and a career-high 10 rebounds for the Marion, North Carolina native's first collegiate double-double performance.

The Pacers were led by Hannah Lewis who posted a 24-point, 12-rebound double-double performance. Myla Barles added 10 points and 10 boards for another Pacer double-double, while Ninevah Reddick added 14 points and six rebounds. 

Brevard outpaced WPU from the field, shooting 45.7% to WPU's 32% mark. The Pacers were able to hit two more 3-pointers (8-6) than the Tornados. BC dominated the boards 51-36, while also turning 24 Pacer turnovers into 31 Brevard points. Head Coach Donald Hudson's squad dominated in the paint, outscoring the Pacers 48-22 in the paint while BC's bench outpaced WPU's 35-15. Brevard led the contest wire-to-wire, leading by as many as 30 at one point. 

The Tornados came out of the gates surging offensively, going on a 23-5 run to open the contest in the first quarter through the first eight minutes of play. The Pacers were able to answer back with five unanswered as Brevard held a 23-10 edge after the first period. 

Brevard controlled things once again in the second quarter, kicking off the period on a 14-3 run that resulted in a 39-20 edge at the halftime intermission. 

The Tornados and Pacers combined for 49 points in the third period, with Brevard holding a 26-23 advantage in the period to extend its lead to a 22-point margin, 65-43, with one quarter left to play. 

A Wells jumper pushed BC's advantage to a game-high 30 points at the 5:08 mark, as the Tornados were able to cruise to the conference victory, 82-58. 

Brevard will be off of game action until Wednesday, January 4, when the Tornados travel to Staunton, Virginia to face Mary Baldwin University at 4:30 p.m. in a doubleheader alongside the BC men's squad.
