Tornados Drop Tight Contest at Berry

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Brevard College women's basketball team (4-3) fell 62-57 to host Berry College (3-4) in a tight non-conference affair on Tuesday evening at the Cage Center in Mount Berry, Georgia.  The defeat snapped a three-game win streak for Brevard.

Junior Makenna Parkins led the Tornados with a 20-10 double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds.  Guard Calli Wells also scored in double-figures with 12 points.  Freshman Olivia Miller made an impact on the boards with six rebounds.  Six different Tornados made shots from beyond the arc with Jada Wilkins, Alexis Marshall, Chyna Pouncey and Makayla Street joining Parkins and Wells with success from three-point range.

Berry had four players score in double figures led by 15 points from Sarah Wright.

The Tornados jumped out to a 13-9 lead after the first quarter, holding the Vikings to 3-of-15 shooting in the stanza.  Berry then responded by flipping the script in the second quarter with a 16-9 scoring advantage to take a 25-22 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter with Berry leading 34-29, Brevard reeled off a 9-0 scoring run to retake the lead sparked by a layup from Miller.  Wells recorded a steal, then finished with a fast break layup to continue the run which was capped by a Parkins field goal and one along with two converted free throws by Wilkins.

The game remained tight through the third quarter and into the fourth before the Vikings opened up an eight-point lead with seven minutes remaining.  The Tornados cut the deficit to three points late on more made free throws by Parkins, but were unable to convert on the offensive end in two final possessions despite multiple second-chance opportunities, resulting from offensive rebounds.

Berry outshot Brevard from the field 38% to 27%, despite the Tornados outperforming the Vikings from beyond the arc with a seven-to-four advantage in made three-pointers.  Brevard also made eight more free throws (20-12) than the hosts.  The battle on the glass saw Berry with a tight 42-40 advantage, while both teams were nearly identical (Brevard 19, Berry 18) in the turnover category.

Brevard returns to action with a home conference matchup vs. Salem College where the Tornados (2-0 USA South) will look to remain undefeated in league play. Tipoff at the Boshamer Gymnasium is set for Saturday at 2 p.m.
