Tornados Improve to 2-0 in USA South Play with Road W at Meredith

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College women's basketball team (4-2, 2-0 USAS) remained undefeated in USA South Conference play with a 56-43 road victory over host Meredith College (1-2, 1-2 USAS) on Saturday afternoon at Weatherspoon Gymnasium in Raleigh, North Carolina.

In the lowest-scoring game of the season thus far for the Tornados, junior forward Makenna Parkins scored 10 points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds.  Freshman guard Jada Wilkins made her Tornado debut with ten points and three steals off the bench. 

Center Naliyah Boyce added nine points and five rebounds.  Also coming off the bench, guard Lexi Shepard led all players with four steals, to go along with six points. 

Brevard opened the game with a steal by sophomore Aysha Short who then set up Parkins with an assist. After trailing 5-4, freshman Olivia Miller hit a jumper that sparked a 7-0 run. Brevard would take a 13-6 lead into the break after holding Meredith to 3-of-18 shooting in the opening quarter.

The Tornados defense registered six steals and held MC to just two field goals en route to a 14-9 advantage in the second quarter to take a 27-15 lead into intermission.

BC doubled up Meredith 20-10 in the third period led by six points from Boyce. A jumper by Miller gave the Tornados their largest at 51-29 with 5:36 to play in regulation. The Avenging Angels finished the contest on a 14-5 run, however, the comeback fell short as BC secured the double-digit road win.

BC held Meredith to 33.9% shooting from the field and did not allow a three-pointer by holding the Avenging Angels 0-for-4 from beyond the arc.  Turnovers aided the Tornados Meredith committed 29 turnovers that resulted in 24 points for BC.

Brevard also struggled at times from the field, shooting a 28% field goal percentage while going just 2-for-24 in three-pointers.

The charity stripe proved to be a factor as well. Brevard shot 16-of-22 (73%) from the line, while Meredith went just 5-of-10 in free throws

The Tornados return to action with a non-conference game at Berry College on Tuesday, November 29 in Mount Berry, Georgia.  BC's next conference game will be vs. Salem College at the friendly confines of the Boshamer Gymnasium on Saturday, December 3 at 2 p.m.
