Nado Newcomer Spotlight: Women’s Basketball Welcomes Eight to 2020-21 Squad

BREVARD, N.C. – Throughout the Fall of 2020, the Brevard College Department of Athletics will be highlighting the new faces in the BC Tornado family, welcoming the freshman and newcomer student-athletes who will be joining Tornado teams during the 2020-21 athletic seasons.

Next up in this series is the BC Women's Basketball, under the direction of Head Coach Donald Hudson and Assistant Coach Taylor Hiatt. The Tornados will welcome a total of eight student-athletes to its team this upcoming season.

"Coach Hiatt and I are extremely excited about the group that we were able to bring in this season," said Hudson, Brevard College Head Women's Basketball Coach. "This class is not only filled with good basketball players, but every kid that we brought in is a high character person."

"Character was important to our staff throughout the recruiting process," continued Hudson. "Finding players that not only fit our playing style, but also fit who we are off the court as people.  Practice has been super competitive and everyone is showing up ready to get better every day. We have a long way to go as a team, but the work that we have been putting in will show for itself when it is time to play."

 

Kaitlin Blanton- Forward/Center- Freshman- Pelion, S.C.- Pelion High School

The Pelion, South Carolina native earned awards as the Most Outstanding Rebounder in 2018-19 and the Best Defensive Player in 2019-20 for Pelion High School. Blanton was a member for the Link Crew leadership and Health Occupations Students for America extracurricular in high school.

 

Kaitlyn Light- Guard- Freshman- Elizabethton, Tenn.- North Buncombe High School

The Elizabethton, Tennessee native was a two-time All-Conference selection in the Western Athletic Conference and a two-time Most Valuable Player selection by North Buncombe High School alongside a Sportsmanship award selection. Light will be a Health Science major at Brevard College.

 

Makenna Parkins- Forward- Freshman- Marion, N.C.- McDowell High School

The Marion, North Carolina native was the Head Captain for two years for both McDowell High School's Volleyball and Women's Basketball teams. She was an All-Conference selection two times in both Basketball and Volleyball and earned All-Tournament team honors in consecutive years and was selected to the Blue-White All Star game in Basketball. Parkins broke two McDowell High School records and ranked third in her conference in kills in Volleyball. Academically, Parkins was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated in the top 3% of her class. Off the court, Parkins was a member of the Relay for Life Club and was a Tutor. Parkins will be a two sport athlete, participating in Volleyball and Basketball at Brevard College and will major in Exercise Science.

 

Cassie Plemmons- Center- Freshman- Asheville, N.C.- North Buncombe High School

The Asheville, North Carolina native will be a two-sport athlete at Brevard College competing in Women's Basketball and Softball. At North Buncombe High School, she helped lead the Women's Basketball team to a Conference Championship in 2019-20. Plemmons was a Western Mountain Athletic Conference selection in softball in the 2019 season. She earned a Scholar-Athlete of the week award. Plemmons will be a Mathematics major (Teaching Licensure) at Brevard College.

 

Chyna Pouncey- Guard- Freshman- Dillon, S.C.- Dillon High School

The Dillon, South Carolina native was a three-time regional champion who made the All-Region VI Team three different times. She helped lead her team to a Lower State runner-up finish. Pouncey graduated as Valedictorian of her high school class and was a member of the Beta Club, the National Honor Society, and was an Honor graduate. She will be a Business and Organizational Leadership major with a minor in Biology at Brevard College.

 

Whitney Thompson- Guard- Freshman- Hendersonville, N.C.- West Henderson High School

The Hendersonville, North Carolina native was a three-sport athlete at West Henderson High School. She competed in basketball, cross country, and track & field. Thompson will be an Exercise Science major with a Coaching minor at Brevard College.

 

Journey Tyler- Guard- Sophomore- Knoxville, Tenn.- Knoxville West High School (University of Tennessee)

The Knoxville, Tennessee native was selected to her All-District team at Knoxville West High School. She was involved with the marching band as an extracurricular activity. Tyler attended the University of Tennessee during her freshman year and will be a Health and Physical Education major at Brevard College.

 

Calli Wells- Guard- Freshman- Fort Mill, S.C.- Fort Mill High School

The Fort Mill, South Carolina native was a two-year captain for Fort Mill High School where she earned Most Valuable Player honors twice. She played for her varsity team all four years and was a two-time All-Region player selection. Wells was awarded multiple All-Tournament Player and Tournament Most Valuable Player honors during her varsity career. She led her high school team in scoring twice. Academically, Wells was a member of the Beta club and made the Honor Roll. She will be a Health Science major at Brevard College.
