Women’s Basketball Heads to Berea on Saturday

BREVARD, N.C. - Following a 10-day lay-off from game action for finals week, the Brevard College women's basketball team (3-6, 1-2 USAS) returns to USA South Conference play on Saturday to square off against the Berea College Mountaineers (6-2, 1-0 USAS) at the Seabury Center in Berea, Kentucky. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.

Brevard comes into play on Saturday following the Tornados picking up their first conference victory of 2019 on December 7 vs. Wesleyan College, 78-58. 

Junior forward Deja Riddick led the Tornados against Wesleyan with 14 points and a team-high five assists.  The Norfolk, Virginia native also pulled down six rebounds, blocked a shot and went a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Junior forward Destiny Williams and senior center Krysta Davis also scored in double figures with each player registering 11 points. 

Sophomore center Avery Lockwood led the Tornados on the glass with 12 rebounds, while freshman Mekindia Martin came off the bench for an all-around performance of five points, seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and one blocked shot. 

The win marked the largest margin of victory this season for the Tornados and also marked team season highs in points (78), field goals made (25), free throws made (18), rebounds (50), assists (18) and blocked shots (six).

As a team, Brevard ranks top-five in the USA South in 3-pointers made (4th, 60). Junior guard Shakirah Thompson has led the way for the Tornados with 19 3-pointers, which is tied for fourth in the conference. 

Berea features the conference's second-highest scoring offense, as the Mountaineers have put up 74.6 points-per-game through their first eight contests. 

The Mountaineers are led in scoring by Aaliyah Hampton (21.8 PPG), Destiny Combs (10.6 PPG), and Bailee Vanover (9.3 PPG).
