MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Berry College (1-2) used a 13-2 run in the first quarter to pull away early from the visiting Brevard College women's basketball team (1-1) in a non-conference matchup on Thursday evening in Mount Berry, Georgia.

The victory for Berry marked the first time that the Vikings have defeated the Tornados in women's basketball, with Brevard taking the first two meetings between the two schools in 2017 and 2018.

Freshman Mekindia Martin and junior Shakirah Thompson each reached double figures in the contest, scoring 10 points each, while freshman Melvia Seymore added nine points in her second game as a Tornado.

Sophomore center Avery Lockwood grabbed nine rebounds, while senior Krysta Davis added seven boards. Lockwood dished out a team-best three assists to lead the Tornado passing attack.

Davis, Lockwood, Martin, and Seymore each recorded blocks in Thursday's match.

Berry outshot Brevard 39% to 29% on the evening, despite the Tornados draining three more 3-pointers than the Vikings (8-5).

The Tornados outperformed the Vikings at the charity stripe, as Brevard shot a 70% clip at the free-throw line to Berry's 56%.

Brevard's 21 turnovers proved costly, as Berry converted those miscues to a total of 28 points-off-turnovers.

Berry held a commanding 32-10 advantage on points in the paint to propel the Vikings toward victory. The hosts scored all six fastbreak points in the contest, while each bench scored 20 points towards their team's respective scoring total.

The Tornados return home on Sunday, November 17 for a 3 p.m. tip-off against Methodist University (0-1) at the Boshamer Gymnasium. Fans are encouraged to bring cans to the Sunday afternoon matchup to support the Brevard College SAAC's efforts in the USA South Conference's "Cans Across The Conference" initiative.
