BREVARD, N.C. - Micayla McCoy hit a grand slam home run to propel the Brevard College Softball team (13-16, 5-3 USAS) to a 7-4 win in the second game of a USA South conference Doubleheader over visiting Covenant (9-16, 4-4 USAS) on Saturday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

Covenant defeated Brevard 2-1 in the first game of the doubleheader as the two teams split the twin bill.

With the bases loaded and the Tornados trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth, McCoy blasted a home run to left field that sent shock waves through the crowd at Ives-Lemel Field.

McCoy, who was the starting pitcher in game one, then came in to pitch the final three innings of game two. The junior from Sylva, North Carolina went on to pitch three nearly perfect innings, allowing no hits and striking out three while walking one to earn her first save in a Tornado uniform.

Kaitlynn Farmer (1-0) earned her first career win as a Tornado. Farmer, who entered the game as a reliever in the top of the fourth with runners on second and third, allowed no runs and no hits after forcing the Scots into two ground outs and a fly out.

The game-deciding bottom of the fourth inning began with Brevard facing a 4-2 deficit.  Second baseman Brittany Franks led off the frame with a single to left field. Farmer executed a sacrifice bunt to move Franks to second who then advanced to third on a fly out by Lauren Dowell.  Sara Lallier followed with an RBI-single to score Dowell and cut the deficit to 4-3.

Emily White drew a walk which prompted Covenant to make a pitching change. Mari Cook then drew another base on balls to load the bases for McCoy who delivered with the dramatic grand slam.

McCoy finished game two 2-for-3 with six RBI, while White went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Ali Grace Hartman started game two on the mound for the Tornados and went 2.1 innings allowing three runs on one hit, two walks, and two hit-by-pitch.  Breanna Allen relieved Hartman in the third, allowing one run on one hit and two walks over 0.2 innings before being relieved by Farmer.

The Tornados took an early 2-0 lead in game two as McCoy hit a 2-RBI single that scored White and Dowell.  The Scots then took the lead with three runs in the third and a run in the top of the fourth. However, the Tornados flipped the script with their four-run fourth and by shutting out Covenant over the final three frames.

Game one was a tight pitchers duel as Covenant's Carsyn Stone (3-9) went seven complete innings holding the Tornados to just three hits.

McCoy also pitched a complete seven innings in game one allowing two runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

Covenant scored runs in the second and third innings to build a 2-0 lead, while Stone did not allow a hit until the sixth inning.

In the sixth, Lallier broke up the no-hit bid with a two-out double to right field.   White then singled to score Lallier for BC's lone run in the contest.  The only other Brevard hit in game one came from shortstop Olivia Presley who singled in the bottom of the seventh.

The Brevard College Softball team will go back to work on Sunday with a USA South doubleheader at Wesleyan in Macon, Georgia set to begin at 1 p.m. ET.
