O’Callaghan Finds Morgan for Game-Winner, Tornados Win Sixth Straight Match

BUENA VISTA, Va. – Senior defender Sam O'Callaghan found freshman defender Daniel Morgan in the 80th minute to give the Brevard College men's soccer team (6-3, 1-0 USA South) a deserved victory in its USA South Conference opener against Southern Virginia University (0-7, 0-1 USAS) on Saturday afternoon in Buena Vista, Virginia.

The Tornados dominated the match from the onset, firing 32 total shots off with 13 being on-goal. SVU made 12 saves, with Brevard taking a total of 13 corner kicks to control possession.

Morgan, a freshman from Northumberland, England, scored BC's lone goal on O'Callaghan's assist – the program NCAA-era record 11th of the Wicklow, Ireland native's career – to lift the Tornados to victory. Morgan fired a team-high six shots off with three reaching target. Luis dos Santos logged five shots, with Igor da Silva and Trystan Wallace each taking four attempts. Caue dos Santos and Agustin Onetto each fired three shots.

Matheus Rossi (6-3) earned yet another shutout facing just one shot attempt the whole contest. The performance was his fifth overall shutout (four solo, one combined) of the 2022 season.

Brevard took a total of 15 shot attempts with four finding the goal, but all of those attempts were denied by SVU's Sean Gutzman as the contest remained scoreless through the first half.

BC fired 13 shots and seven on-goal – all of which being saved – before O'Callaghan whipped in a beautiful cross from the right side of the field that found a sprinting Morgan on the far post, who finished the attempt to give the Tornados the game-winning goal.

Brevard's Onetto hit a shot off the crossbar in the 85th minute for the final goal-scoring opportunity of the contest as BC finished off the conference-opening victory, 1-0.

The Tornados return home on Wednesday, October 5 for non-conference action to face Johnson & Wales (NC) at 7 p.m. at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
