BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's soccer team (7-6-3, 7-3-3 USAS) concludes its regular-season home schedule and wrapped up USA South Conference play with a resounding victory, 5-0, over the Huntingdon Hawks (7-10, 4-9 USAS) on a bright and sunny Sunday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
With the victory, Brevard concludes conference action with a 7-3-3 record (.654 winning percentage) in USA South play, which is good enough for second place in the USA South West Division. The Tornados would hold their division's two seed in the USA South Tournament if Brevard was eligible for conference postseason play.
Several team and individual statistical milestones were reached in Sunday's match.
Brevard's 44 shots went above-and-beyond the school NCAA-era record for single-game shots, 10 more than the previous mark set on September 11, 2016, vs. King College and on September 30, 2017, vs. Berea College (34 shots each). The Tornados' five goals are tied for the second-most in a single game, tying a mark totaled in a 5-0 victory vs. Maryville College earlier this season on October 2. BC's seven wins in 2019 are tied for the program's second-most in the NCAA-era. A victory in the regular-season finale on Wednesday, October 30 at Piedmont International would tie the program NCAA-era record for single-season wins, set by the 2016 BC men's soccer team.
Senior midfielder Matheus Masukawa who played in his last regular-season home match as a Tornado along with his senior classmates scored two goals in Brevard's dominant victory. His first goal of the afternoon gave the São Paulo, Brazil native his 11th career goal and 28th career point, which broke Brevard's career record for goals & points scored in the NCAA era. Masukawa's second goal of the contest - his seventh of the 2019 season - set a new single-season goals-scored record. Masukawa's 17 points in 2019 set a new record for single-season points scored.
Alongside Masukawa's two goals, junior forward JP Suarti added a goal and his first two assists at Brevard, while senior defender Alex Tenjhay added a goal to Brevard's ledger. Freshman midfielder Joao Monteiro recorded his first collegiate goal, while senior Jackson Riddle and freshmen Lucas Campos and Vinicius Giannaccini all recorded assists. Senior goalkeeper Patrick Hall stopped the only two shots that he faced on-frame, while freshman Pedro Campos saw his first action in goal for the Tornados of the 2019 season. Campos played 25 minutes and recorded a save.
A total of 26 Tornados saw action in Sunday's match as Head Coach Helio "L" D'Anna kept everyone fresh throughout the contest. Brevard's offensive attack was diverse, as 18 players in total let shots fly.
Brevard held a staggering 44-5 advantage in shots, including an 11-3 tilt in shots-on-frame. The Tornados won a total of seven corners on the afternoon.
Campos logged eight shot attempts to lead Brevard's barrage of shots. Suarti tallied five shots, while Giannaccini and Adam Spencer each let four shots off. Masukawa, Monteiro, and Lucca Silvani each recorded three shots to bolster Brevard's attack.
Following a Brevard corner kick and shot attempt in the first six minutes, Monteiro connected for BC's first of five goals. The Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil native was played a ball from Suarti and controlled it, made a move to shake the Huntingdon defender, and placed the ball on the right side of the net for the goal in the seventh minute.
Following five consecutive Brevard shot attempts, Suarti found the back of the net in the 17th minute to give the Tornados a 2-0 advantage. Suarti controlled a loose ball and established his footing to rifle a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner of the net.
Brevard controlled the attack again, letting nine shots fly before the Tornados found their third goal of the afternoon - a Masukawa header with service by Riddle - in the 33rd minute. The Tornados held a controlling 3-0 advantage heading into the halftime intermission.
Huntingdon started off the second half with a few of its only shot attempts of the contest before Brevard's offensive dominance was reestablished. BC's fourth goal was an illustration of shifty ball movement, as Campos clipped the ball from the top of the box to Giannaccini, who from the left side of the goal played in Masukawa, who tapped in from the right side of the goal to extend Brevard's lead to 4-0.
Just a minute and a half later the Tornado attack struck again when Tenjhay was played the ball from Suarti and rocketed a shot over the head of the Huntingdon goalkeeper to all but put away Brevard's big home win, 5-0.
The Tornados will conclude the regular season on Wednesday, October 30 when Brevard heads to Winston-Salem, N.C. to face Piedmont International University. First touch is slated for 6 p.m. Brevard will then await a possible bid into the ECAC Championships. 2019 marks the last year that Brevard will be ineligible for NCAA postseason competition.
