Tornados Drop Match to Conference Leading Covenant

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's soccer team (5-6-3, 5-3-3 USAS) fell 2-0 to USA Conference leader Covenant (14-2-1, 11-0-0) 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

The match was a make-up game following a postponement due to lightning of the originally scheduled home opener for Brevard on September 14.

Covenant jumped ahead, 1-0 in the 14th minute before adding an insurance goal in the 58th minute en route to the victory.


Jesse Riggs scored the initial goal for the Scots off an assist by Josh Bower to take the initial lead.  Bower then scored an unassisted goal to put Covenant ahead 2-0 in the second half.

For the match, the Scots outshot the Tornados by just one attempt, 12-11.  In the first half, Brevard outshot Covenant 9-4 with three shots on goal and several shots blocked by Scot defenders.  The second-half offense was more scarce for Brevard with just two total shots and one shot on goal in the second stanza.

Covenant dominated in corner kicks (10-3) and had more free-kick opportunities as a result of 17 BC fouls.

Brevard's 11 total shots in the contest came from seven different players.  Eric Lenhart and Adam Spencer each fired off three shots. Meanwhile, Marquis Dickerson, Vinicius Giannaccini, Matheus Masukawa, Joao Monteiro, and Jackson Riddle each recorded one shot.

Goalkeeper Patrick Hall again played all 90 minutes of the match, registering four saves for the Tornados.

Paul Lemey of Covenant posted a shutout in goal with saves on all four of BC's shots on goal.

Next up for the Tornados is a home match vs. Berea College at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Ives-Lemel Family Field.  The match will also signify Senior Day with a ceremony at halftime for the graduating Tornado senior class.  The home schedule and conference slate will then conclude on Sunday at 1 p.m. vs. Huntingdon College.  Brevard will then hit the road for the regular-season finale on Wednesday, October 30 at Piedmont International in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
