BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's lacrosse team (2-8, 0-3 USAS) fell 23-2 to LaGrange College (5-5, 1-1 USAS) in a USA South Conference matchup on a windy Saturday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
Sophomore Finnegan McCormack and freshman Gage Khayat scored goals for the Tornados with sophomore Drew Pond recording an assist. It marked the 12th goal of the season for McCormack, matching his total from last season. Pond now has a team-best nine assists on the season.
Starting goalkeeper Jack Hicks recorded 17 saves, while Scott Bundy registered three saves in just over six minutes of action.
LaGrange was led by Klein Woods with six goals and Luke Young with five goals and one assist. Starting goalie Issac Bohrer earned the win after earning a first-half shutout for the Panthers.
The two teams went scoreless for the first 2:44 until a goal by Woods opened the scoring for LaGrange. The Panthers went on to take a 5-0 lead at the end of the first period. LaGrange then scored eight goals in the second period to head into halftime with a 13-0 advantage.
The Panthers added four more goals over the first seven minutes of the third period until BC got on the board with McCormack's goal off an assist by Pond.
To conclude the game's scoring, Khayat delivered his sixth goal of his freshman campaign with 1:06 to play in regulation.
LaGrange outshot Brevard 70-41 with 27 of BC's shots coming in the second half. The two teams were virtually even in ground balls with the Panthers holding a 46-45 edge. Neither team was successful in man-up situations with the two teams going a combined 0-10 with a man advantage.
BC won 16 of the 29 face-offs, led by 11 wins from junior Will Scoggins and four from freshman Ben Willhelm. Scoggins also picked up a team-best seven ground balls.
Next up for Brevard is a conference road trip to William Peace on Saturday, April 1 in Cary, North Carolina.
