Hawks Over Tornados in USA South Opener

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Brevard College Men's Lacrosse team (2-6, 0-1 USAS) fell 21-5 to host Huntingdon College (4-4, 1-0 USAS) in the USA South Conference opener for both teams on Saturday in Montgomery, Alabama.

Sophomore attacker Frankie Howard led Brevard offensively with two goals in the contest.  Junior Andrew McDonald recorded one goal and one assist, firing off a team-high four shots.  Sophomore midfielder Finnegan McCormack and graduate attacker Parker Corbett each scored goals as well with Henry Konsker and Drew Pond each registering assists.

Goalkeeper Jack Hicks played the majority of the game, registering 19 saves. Scott Bundy also saw time in goal and recorded a save.

Huntingdon's Gage Kettlewell led all players with seven goals as HC's Caden Bacz registered five goals.   Kelcey Marston recorded a game-high five assists to lead the Hawks in distribution.  Goalkeeper EJ Umphries earned the win with eight saves.

The game began with the two teams scoreless for the first 4:29 until Pond set up Howard giving BC the initial 1-0 advantage.  The Hawks answered with an equalizer a couple of minutes, the first of seven consecutive goals to end the first period.

Once again, the next period began as a defensive stalemate with neither team scoring in the first eight minutes.  Following two more Huntingdon goals, BC got back on the board with a second goal from Howard with 4:52 to play before intermission.  Brevard then scored twice in the final minute of the half.  McDonald set up Corbett for a goal with 49 seconds to play to take advantage of a man-up opportunity.  McCormack then scored just as time was expiring to cut the deficit to 10-4 heading into the break.

Huntingdon pulled away in the second half with the lone BC goal in the second stanza coming from McDonald off an assist by Konsker with 3:30 to play in the third quarter.

The Tornados return to action with their conference home opener vs. Pfeiffer University on Tuesday at 3 pm at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
