Skyhawks Score Three Late to Take One-Goal Win over Tornados, 11-10

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's lacrosse team (2-5) fell at home to Point University (1-8), 11-10, on Monday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

The Skyhawks scored three goals in the fourth quarter and denied BC a chance at an equalizer late as Point earned its first win of the season at the hands of the Tornados, who fell to 2-5 on the season.

Parker Corbett, a graduate attacker from New Westminister, Ontario by way of Averett University, scored three goals while eclipsing the 100-point mark for his career, as the fourth-year student-athlete played three seasons with the Cougars before attending Brevard College.

Andrew McDonald and Henry Konsker each tallied two goals and an assist each, while Frankie Howard dished out a team-high two assists with a goal and Finnegan McCormack logged a goal and an assist. Freshman attacker Gage Khayat also found the back of the net once for the Tornados.

Defensively, McDonald led all Tornados with six ground balls while Atticus Cooper scooped up four. Jacob Gravely caused a pair of turnovers for BC's defense, while freshman Ben Wilhelm won 10 faceoffs.

Point was paced by Jeff Knapp, who scored a game-high six goals with an assist for seven points. Malyke Sillers scored three times with an assist while Shaun McLaughlin added two goals. Knapp also grabbed 10 ground balls and won 14 faceoffs defensively.

Point outshot Brevard 49-32 and logged 28 ground balls to BC's 23. Brevard's goalkeeping duo of Scott Bundy (0-2) and Jack Hicks made 15 saves in the cage.

The Skyhawks started the first quarter hot, outscoring Brevard 5-1 through the first period as Knapp, McLaughlin, and Sillers all found the back of the net.

BC answered back with a pair of Corbett goals and a McDonald strike to cut the deficit to one goal, 5-4, but the Skyhawks scored a pair before the halftime intermission to make it a three-goal affair, 7-4.

The Tornados came out of the locker rooms on fire in the third period, as Brevard outscored Point 5-1 to take a 9-8 advantage with one period left to play.

Point was able to answer back with three goals in the first nine minutes of the fourth quarter to retake the lead, 11-9.

Konsker scored off a Howard assist with just under three minutes left to play, and the Tornados had a total of five shots in the last moments of the contest with a chance to take a lead - including a last-second shot from McCormack that hit off the post and narrowly missed going in - as the Skyhawks escaped with the one-goal win, 11-10.

The Tornados gear up for USA South Conference play on Saturday as Brevard heads down to Montgomery, Alabama for a doubleheader of lacrosse action alongside the BC women's team. Brevard will face Huntingdon College at 12 p.m. ET / 11 a.m. CT.
