Back-to-Back Road Conference Wins for Tornados as BC Takes Down Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Brevard College men's basketball team (6-11, 2-4 USAS) defeated host Greensboro (7-9, 2-3 USAS) 70-63 in USA South Conference competition on Wednesday night in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The win gave the Tornados back-to-back road victories in league play after defeating Methodist on Sunday in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Four players scored in double figures to lead a balanced attack for Brevard in the midweek matchup on the home court of conference rival Greensboro.

Sophomore forward Garrett Sutherland scored a career-high 15 points in the win, marking the second straight contest that the Atlanta native has set a career-best in scoring. Sutherland, who posted 14 points in Sunday's win at Methodist, hit a career-high three 3-pointers en route to his top point total in Wednesday's victory.

Junior Carson Evans and sophomore Kavan Horton each scored 13 points.  Evans hit three 3-pointers and dished out a game-high five assists.  Horton scored in double figures for the fifth consecutive game dating back to a career-best 14 points on January 7 vs. Southern Virginia.

Senior Chancey Watson continued his hot hand after leading BC with 18 points at Methodist. On Wednesday, Watson went 5-of-9 from the field and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc en route to a 12-point performance.  The native of Charlotte, North Carolina led the Tornados on the glass with a season-high seven rebounds to go along with a blocked shot.

Junior LB Boyette scored seven points to go along with five points from Jadon Carnes and Charles Reed to round out the scoring.  Reed added two steals on the defensive end.

Matthew Brown led Greensboro with 12 points and nine rebounds.  Grant Thompson was the only other GC player in double figures with 11 points.

Brevard led in the early goings, beginning with a Horton 3-pointer off an assist by Evans in the first possession for the visiting Tornados.  A few minutes later, Evans hit his first 3-pointer of the night to give BC an 11-6 advantage.

Greensboro took its first lead of the game with a 3-pointer by Isiah Pruett to go ahead 18-16 at the 9:42 mark of the opening half. The score remained tight for the rest of the first half culminating with a made jumper by Evans to give Brevard a 30-26 lead at the break.

BC maintained its lead throughout the second half highlighted by a Watson bucket from beyond the arc to extend the lead at 49-40.  A few possessions later, Boyette hit a bomb from three-point range to give the Tornados their largest lead of ten points, 52-42.

The Pride came back to cut the deficit to 57-55 with 5:39 to play. BC responded with 3-pointers by Sutherland, Evans and Watson to stretch its lead back to nine points with under three minutes to play. The Tornados continued to hold off the hosts down the stretch with several a couple key defensive stops to secure the second win in as many games.

Brevard outshot Greensboro 45% to 40% from the field, while hitting five more 3-pointers.  Brevard led in 37 of the 40 minutes of action and never trailed after the 9:42 mark of the opening half.

BC returns home with a Saturday matinee against USA South Conference opponent William Peace.  Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Boshamer Gymnasium
