Tornados Hold Off Monarchs for First USA South Win of Season

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Brevard College men's basketball team (5-11, 1-4 USA South) held off the Methodist University Monarchs (0-15, 0-4 USAS) 77-72 for its first conference victory of the 2022-23 season on Sunday afternoon in Fayetteville, North Carolina. 

Senior guard Chancey Watson led all Tornados with 18 points off the bench, shooting 6-of-10 from the field with a 4-of-6 mark from beyond the 3-point line, pacing five Tornados who scored in double figures. Freshman forward Jadon Carnes added 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting, while Garrett Sutherland logged 14 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Kavan Horton pitched in 12 points with six rebounds and three assists, and Carson Evans tallied 10 points. 

Methodist was led by Montell Moore who exploded for 27 points with 11 made field goals in addition to eight rebounds and three assists. Clayton Coe added 13 points and Derrion Hicklen scored 10 points. 

The Tornados shot a highly-efficient 58% from the field with a 45% clip from beyond the arc. Methodist was able to hang around in the contest with a solid defensive effort, forcing 16 Brevard turnovers that turned into 20 points. BC dished out 17 assists in the matchup. 

Brevard used a 61% shooting clip from the field with five made 3-pointers in the first half to surge for 47 points, as the Tornados held a 14-point advantage, 47-33, at the halftime intermission. 

BC opened the second half on a 14-3 run through the first seven minutes to extend its advantage to a 23-point margin, 61-38. With 5:20 left to play and the Tornados up by 16 points, 72-56, the Monarchs put together a late run cutting the deficit to six points, 74-68, with 1:21 remaining. A late Horton layup and a made free throw from Evans helped seal the deal, as the Tornados clinched their first conference win of 2022-23, 77-72.

Brevard is back in action on the road on Wednesday in Greensboro, North Carolina against Greensboro College, with tip set for 7 p.m.
