Tigers Pull Past Tornados at The Bosh, 87-82

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's basketball team (0-4) dropped a non-conference matchup to The University of the South (4-3), 87-82, on Tuesday evening at the Boshamer Gymnasium. 

Sewanee was propelled by four double-digit scorers and strong second-half scoring runs, as a late Tornado comeback attempt came up short. 

For the fourth time in as many contests, junior guard LB Boyette reached double figures for the Tornados in points, as the Charlotte native totaled 18 points on 7-for-13 shooting with a team-best four made 3-point jumpers. Sophomore guard Kavan Horton added 12 points with three assists off the bench. 

Freshman forward Jadon Carnes aided BC's reserve efforts with nine point and a perfect 4-for-4 mark from the field. Charles Reed added eight points and grabbed a team-best eight boards with three steals. Paris Crawford (seven points), Garrett Sutherland (six points), and Sly White (five points) all contributed to BC's bench effort as Brevard's reserves outscored Sewanee's 47-7. 

The Tigers were paced by a 30-point effort from Russ Marr, who went 8-for-12 from the field that included a 5-of-7 mark from long distance with nine made free throws. Colin Kahl added 19 points on a 9-of-13 mark from the field. Tre Corrigan scored 15 points with seven boards and five assists, while Luke Avaliani logged 14 points and grabbed a team/best eight boards. 

Sewanee hit its shots at a highly-efficient 27-for-47 mark (57.4%) from the field, but BC hit two more 3-pointers (10-8) than the Tigers. BC grabbed four more rebounds than Sewanee and forced 21 Tiger turnovers that translated into 29 points off turnovers. The matchup featured eight ties and 11 lead changes as both sides jockeyed for the lead throughout most of the first half. 

Sewanee held a 14-7 advantage through the first media timeout and was able to extend its lead to a 10-point cushion, 19-9, with 14:17 left in the first half. Brevard used a 14-2 run over the course of the next four minutes capped off by a Carnes 3-pointer at the 10:40 mark to give BC a two-point lead, 23-21. 

Brevard and Sewanee went back and forth through the next 10 minutes of action, trading the lead before ending up all knotted up at 39 all when the contest shifted to the halftime break. Carson Evans led all Tornados with seven points at the break, while Boyette, Crawford, and White each had five. 

Sewanee began to pull away midway through the second half, extending its lead to double figures at 58-47 with 11:36 left to play. The Tigers held a game-best 75-59 advantage at the 5:08 mark before Brevard mounted a spirited comeback effort. The Tornados were able to put together a 21-10 scoring stretch to make it a five-point affair, 85-80, with 29 seconds to play after Boyette's 3-pointer. However, the Tigers were able to hit a couple of free throws and force a missed 3-pointer to wrap up the 87-82 victory. 

Brevard will travel to Swannanoa, North Carolina for a rematch with Warren Wilson College on Tuesday, November 29 at 7 p.m. to close out the month of November.
