Tornados Fall Late to Bruins in Regular Season Opener, 86-81

BREVARD, N.C. - Junior guard LB Boyette dropped 25 points while senior guard Quincy Carter added 16, but the Brevard College men's basketball team (0-1) fell late as Bob Jones University (1-0) pulled away in the final minute on Thursday night at the Boshamer Gymnasium. 

Boyette, a junior from Charlotte, North Carolina, totaled 25 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the field, going 3-for-7 from behind the arc. Carter added 16 points on an efficient 6-of-7 shooting mark, while Kavan Horton posted a 12-point effort in what was the sophomore guard from Asheville's regular season collegiate debut. 

Sly White, a junior guard from Raleigh, North Carolina, logged a career-high nine points off the bench for the Tornados, with sophomore center Ryan Smith adding eight points. Boyette led all BC players with six boards with Smith grabbing five. Horton swiped three steals with Smith adding a pair. 

Bob Jones had four players reach double figures, with Stephan Hugley (27 points) and Henry Blair (24 points) leading the charge. Hugley totaled a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds, with Brian Sims adding 14 points and six boards. Trevor Brunson scored 11 off the bench for the Bruins. 

BJU maintained an extremely efficient shooting effort with a 36-for-63 (57.1%) mark from the field to BC's 50% clip. The Tornados hit five more 3-pointers (8-3) than Bob Jones, but the Bruins hit 78% of their free throw attempts to BC's 58% mark. 

The difference was made in the painted area, as BJU attacked the paint with 62 points to BC's 40. The contest swung back and forth with six ties and eight lead changes. BJU held the largest lead of the contest (10) midway through the first half, with BC's game-high lead coming early in the second frame. 

BC jumped to an early 8-3 lead before the Bruins flipped the script, taking an 11-10 lead at the under-16 media timeout. BJU and BC battled close through the under-12 media stoppage with a three-point lead from the visitors, 19-16. The Bruins then used a 7-2 run to extend the lead to eight points, 26-18, with 9:40 left in the first half. 

BJU took a game-high 10-point cushion with 9:25 left in the period, but the Tornados clawed their way back, eventually taking the lead on a pair of Carter free throws to give the hosts a one-point advantage, 41-40. 

BC came out of the locker rooms hot, hitting four field goals in a row to push its lead to a game-high nine points, 49-40. Bob Jones was able to climb back, tying things back up at 65 all with 9:06 left to play. Despite a late seven-point deficit, 75-68 at the 6:15 mark, the Tornados did not give in, tying the game up late twice. Horton hit a jumper that tied the action at 79-70 with 2:10 left to play, while Smith's electric put-back with under a minute to play tied the score at 81-81. 

Bob Jones utilized its next offensive possession, scoring with ease to regain the lead, 83-81. After Boyette's missed 3-pointer with 20 seconds left, BJU iced the contest with a layup and made free throws, as the Tornados dropped the contest to Bob Jones, 86-81. 

Brevard plays its last DI exhibition on Saturday at 3 p.m. against UNC Asheville in Asheville, North Carolina. The regular season resumes on Wednesday, November 16 as BC hosts Warren Wilson at 7 p.m.
