Tornados Fall to Scots in Conference Opener

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College Men's Basketball team (0-2, 0-1 USAS) dropped its USA South Conference opener, 88-63, to the visiting Maryville College Scots (2-1, 1-1 USAS) on Saturday evening inside the Boshamer Gymnasium.

David Sealy led all Tornados with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers. Sealy stuffed the stat sheet in what was a career-best outing for the sophomore guard out of Deltona, Florida, who made his second career start. Sealy added six rebounds, four assists, and four steals to his offensive output to pace three double-digit Tornado scorers.

Michael Peters, a freshman forward from Charlotte, added 14 points in 18 minutes of action off the bench, knocking down a pair of triples on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor, while grabbing five rebounds in his second collegiate contest. Ladji Samoura, a junior transfer from Fayetteville, North Carolina, added 12 points on 5-of-12 shooting. Benjamin Jeffcoat, a sophomore transfer from Columbia, South Carolina, made his Tornado debut on Saturday, totaling six points and four assists.

Maryville's offense was paced by four double-digit scorers, with Myles Rasnick dropping a game-high 19 points with a perfect 8-of-8 shooting from the free throw line. Jekobe Coleman and JR Sanders each posted 12 points, while Kevin Chong added 10 points. Nicholas Clifton hauled in a game-high nine rebounds for the Scots.

The visitors used a highly efficient scoring attack to claim the victory, shooting 34-of-58 (58.6%) from the field to BC's 41.3% effort. The Scots were able to control the paint, outrebounding the Tornados 40-24 while totaling 50 points-in-the-paint on the evening, while also outshooting BC at the free throw line, 88% to 25%. Brevard was able to force 19 Maryville turnovers in the contest, which it turned into 18 points on the opposite end.

The Scots opened play on a 15-2 scoring run through the first five minutes of action. Maryville extended its early lead to a 21-6 mark just prior to the under-12 media timeout. BC was able to cut the deficit to 10 points following a 3-pointer from Hayden Cassell with 5:50 left in the first period, but the Scots maintained their advantage into the intermission, carrying a 47-35 advantage into the break.

Both sides enjoyed hot shooting in the first half, with Maryville knocking down 20-of-32 (62.5%) from the field compared to Brevard's 15-of-27 (55.6%) mark.

The Scots were able to quickly extend their advantage to a 23-point margin by utilizing a 13-2 scoring run to begin action in the second half. The Tornados cut into the deficit with a game-high seven-point scoring stretch capped off with a Samoura layup making the score 60-44, however, Maryville was able to keep the Tornados out of striking distance for the remainder of the contest to claim the conference victory.

Brevard and Maryville are set to conclude their two-game weekend series on Sunday afternoon, with tipoff slated for 3 p.m. inside the Boshamer Gymnasium.
