Early Turnovers Costly as Builders Sink Tornados, 27-7

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Brevard College football team (0-2) fell 27-7 to The Apprentice School (2-0) in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon in Newport News, Virginia.

A pair of first-half turnovers combined with a 0-for-4 mark on fourth-down conversions hampered BC's efforts to battle back into the contest.

Junior quarterback Eli Carr played the second half and went 12-for-18 for 102 yards and a touchdown, while Devonte Murray led BC's rushing efforts with 11 carries for 49 yards. Graduate wide receiver Jonathan Woods led all Tornados with six catches for 56 yards and Brevard's lone touchdown of the afternoon.

Jerome Bass and Dylan James logged six tackles each, while Obidiah Grimes totaled his first sack as a Tornado. BC's special teams unit blocked a pair of field goals to keep the Tornados within striking distance.

Miles Tatum, Apprentice's starting quarterback, went 21-for-36 with 201 yards and two touchdowns - one rushing and one passing - while Lawrence Reed had 10  carries for 52 yards and a rushing touchdown.

Apprentice out-gained the Tornados 288-to-229 offensively, with BC holding the ground edge 102-to-80 and the Builders eclipsed 200 passing yards. Brevard was penalized nine times to Apprentice's seven.

The Tornados return to play next Saturday, September 17 with a trip to Danville, Virginia to take on Averett University at 6 p.m. in a matchup of former USA South rivals.
