BREVARD, N.C. - Following a breakout game that included two interceptions, three pass breakups, and five tackles, freshman defensive back/running back Joc Pledger has been named the USA South Conference Football Defensive Rookie of the Week award for the ending on October 21.
The nod marks the third conference award that BC Football has earned in the 2019 season.
Pledger, a freshman from Monroe, Georgia, grabbed his first two career interceptions and broke up three passes in a 21-10 loss to USA South foe Huntingdon last week. Both of his interceptions came inside Brevard territory while his second was in the endzone at the end of the first half to prevent a score.
Pledger's second interception near halftime last Saturday was Brevard's 13th pick of the season, which broke the single-season NCAA-era record for team interceptions. Brevard leads the USA South with 13 interceptions, which is five more INT's than any other team in the conference and ranks tied for fourth in all of NCAA Division III Football (as of October 20).
Pledger and the rest of the Tornado football team hit the road for back-to-back conference road games. Brevard heads to Rocky Mount, North Carolina next week to take on N.C. Wesleyan College (3-3, 2-1 USAS) on Saturday, October 26 at 1 p.m. before making the trip to LaGrange, Georgia for a matchup with LaGrange College (3-3, 1-2 USAS) on Saturday, November 2 at 2 p.m.
