BREVARD, N.C. - Homecoming festivities are set to commence on the campus of Brevard College this weekend surrounding a big conference-opening matchup for the Brevard College Tornados football team (2-0), who welcome defending USA South Conference champion Maryville College (0-3) to Brevard Memorial Stadium this Saturday at 3 p.m.

The Tornados and Scots will square off for only the second time in school history, as Maryville claimed a 29-3 decision last season in Maryville, Tenn.  This year's clash will mark the USA South Conference opener for each team.

Brevard is off to the second-best start in the program's NCAA history following resounding victories at home to Christopher Newport University (Sept. 21, 27-6) and on the road at Allen University (Sept 28, 40-9). Head Coach Bill Khayat's team joins the 2009 Tornado squad as the only other team to start the season with an undefeated record through its first two contests.

Individual conference and national awards have been plentiful for Brevard thus far in 2019, as two pairs of honorees have been chosen for conference and national weekly honors.

Senior defensive back Quentin Jackson - who has recorded 10 tackles and two interceptions through Brevard's first two contests - was named to D3football.com's Team of the Week, presented by Scoutware, following Brevard's big home win vs. Christopher Newport. Freshman punter Jaxon Youngblood - who has averaged 40.8 yards-per-punt on 12 attempts, pinning opponents inside the 20-yard line seven times with a season-long 56-yard punt - represented Brevard College on this week's D3football.com Team of the Week, in addition to being selected as the USA South Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday. Freshman defensive back Tae Sullivan - who recorded six tackles and his first career interception in last Saturday's victory at Allen - was selected as the USA South Conference's Defensive Rookie of the Week for his breakout performance.

Brevard's defense, led by Defensive Coordinator Luke Jaicks, has made significant noise through the team's first two contests of 2019. Jaicks' unit has allowed a conference-best 15 points (7.5 points-per-game) and topping the conference by allowing under 100 rushing yards through the first two contests (92 yards-per-game allowed). BC's defense has caused havoc, tallying eight interceptions - which leads the USA South -  four fumbles forced (one recovery), and four total sacks. Three of those sacks have been accounted for by junior linebacker Steffon Canady, who is third in the conference in total sacks.

Brevard's offense has been paced by sophomore quarterback Dalton Cole and a rejuvenated rushing attack. Cole has completed 23 of his 39 attempts for 395 passing yards and two touchdowns while contributing heavily to Brevard's rushing attack. Cole ran for a career-high 100 yards on 16 carries in BC's win over Christopher Newport, tallying two touchdowns rushing in the process. Cole has rushed 23 times for 108 yards and three touchdowns, which ranks second on the team behind sophomore running back Damon Rouse who has 18 carries for 139 yards and two scores.

Special teams have played a big role in Brevard's success so far. Special teams Coordinator Jeron Gouveia-Winslow has a unit averaging 40.8 yards-per-punt, which ranks second in the conference. Brevard's kickoff returns have averaged 26 yards-per-return, which ranks second in the USA South. The Tornados' special teams unit also blocked a field goal attempt vs. Christopher Newport, as junior defensive back Dante Anderson got a hand on the ball to deflect the try.

Following this weekend's homecoming contest, the Brevard College Tornados hit the road and head to Fayetteville, N.C. for a conference road test vs. Methodist University on Saturday, October 12 at 1 p.m. Brevard returns home on Saturday, October 19 for a 1 p.m kickoff against Huntingdon College at Brevard Memorial Stadium.
