Brevard Drops Midweek Contest against Montreat at Big League Camp

MARION, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team (1-9) dropped a non-conference midweek road contest at Big League Camp in Marion, North Carolina to local WNC-area opponent Montreat College (10-6) by a final of 11-2 on a chilly Wednesday evening.

JJ Wilkes led all Tornado hitters with a pair of hits while freshmen Brandin Johnson and Cade Stecher each collected a hit. BC freshmen Zachary Allison and Joc Pledger each earned their first respective career starts for the Tornados patrolling the outfield.

Bryce Bowers (0-1) earned the starting nod for the Tornados, going 3.2 innings and allowing five runs. The relief core of Jakob Dennis, Bobby Massey, and Alex Winchester combined for 3.1 innings of work, allowing just a pair of earned runs.

Montreat's offense was potent throughout the evening, racking up a grand total of 16 hits en route to its 11-run performance. Five Cavaliers finished with multi-hit outings behind a solid start from Colin Kriminger who lasted six innings while giving up just three hits and an earned run while punching out nine batters.

Brevard struck for its two runs in the top of the first inning, after Stecher led off with a single. Zachary Allison drew a walk to put runners on first and second base with nobody out, and Stecher came around to score on a Montreat throwing error to give the Tornados a 1-0 lead. BC's advantage doubled when Johnson hit an RBI single that put Head Coach Mike Victory's squad up by a 2-0 margin.

Montreat was able to cut BC's lead in half with an RBI-single in the bottom of the first frame, and tied the score in the bottom of the third inning, using a two-out rally to scratch across the game-tying run.

The Cavaliers put up their first crooked number in the bottom fourth innning, scoring three runs to put themselves on top, 5-2.

From there, Montreat would score one run in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings for its 8-2 lead. A three-run eighth frame all but sealed the Cavaliers' 11-2 victory.

The Tornados will return to USA South Conference play this weekend when BC travels to Rocky Mount, North Carolina for a series against NC Wesleyan College. Brevard and NC Wesleyan will face off in a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. before closing out the set on Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch time.
