Big Fifth Inning Pushes Pfeiffer Past Brevard, 9-2

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Brevard College Tornados Baseball team (6-16, 1-12 USAS) fell in USA South Conference action to the Pfeiffer Falcons (14-4, 8-3 USAS) on Saturday evening at Joe Ferebee Field. 

The Falcons and Tornados battled to a 1-1 tie through four innings before Pfeiffer surged for a seven-run fifth inning to help take the 9-2 victory. 

Matthew Scavotto (1-3) got the start for BC, lasting four and a third innings. The freshman allowed just one run through the first four innings before the fifth inning, where he was tagged for three more runs for a total of four earned runs on six hits. Scavotto struck out three Falcons as well. 

Alex Winchester and Ryan Terte shut down Pfeiffer in the seventh and eighth innings in relief work. Winchester struck out two batters, while Terte got one Falcon out swinging. 

Donny Carsillo and Johnny Flynn picked up BC's only RBI's of the evening, while Joseph Zub and Jack Atkinson came across to score for the Tornados. 

Brevard got on the board first, as Donny Carsillo singled home Atkinson in the top of the first inning, giving the Tornados a 1-0 lead. 

Pfeiffer struck back in the bottom half of the inning with a sac-fly to tie the game, 1-1

Both sides went scoreless the next three innings before the fateful fifth inning where Pfeiffer struck for seven runs on five hits, taking advantage of a BC fielding error as well. 

The Falcons pushed their lead to 9-1 in the sixth with an RBI single. 

The Tornados would score once more, as Flynn singled home Zub with two outs in the ninth inning. 

Brevard closes out its three-game conference series with Pfeiffer tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Joe Ferebee Field in Misenheimer, N.C.
