#NCAAInclusion Day 2: “Broadening Our Horizons” - Featuring SAAC VP/Football’s Josh Romero

BREVARD, N.C. - Throughout the NCAA’s Annual Diversity & Inclusion Week, several Brevard College student-athletes, coaches, and athletic staff will be featured on bctornados.com

The second day of the four-day week (October 22-25) is titled “Broadening Our Horizons” - a day that is focused on identifying diverse connections across campus and highlighting diverse friendships, mentors, and role models.

#NCAAInclusion Week, sponsored by the NCAA’s Office of Inclusion, helps bring awareness and spotlight to diversity and inclusion on college campuses by giving student-athletes, coaches, faculty, and staff an outlet to share their stories through social media.

Below highlights Brevard College football senior defensive lineman Josh Romero, who serves as the BC's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Vice President, as Brevard’s second feature of #NCAAInclusion Week.

bctornados.com: “What role model has had an impact in your life and why?”

Josh Romero: “A role model that has had an impact in my life has been my father. I choose my dad because he’s the reason I’m the person I am today. Despite all the obstacles I have been through, he has always been by my side no matter what. Everything he has done for me just motivates me to succeed in life and become a better person.”

bctornados.com: “What connections have you made on the Brevard College campus as it relates to personal growth?”

Josh Romero: “Some connections that I’ve made on the Brevard College campus that have helped my personal growth come from being involved around campus. I’m always involved in something and that has truly helped me in several ways. It has opened up new opportunities for me, helped me to meet some great people, etc.”

bctornados.com: “Describe a time where you have gone outside of your comfort zone and broadened your horizons when it comes to diversity and inclusion.”

Josh Romero: “Being a senior here at Brevard College, there’s lots of time where I’m either shy or not comfortable speaking to new people. I have gone out of my comfort zone to make sure that they feel welcomed here.”

bctornados.com: “What BC coach/faculty/staff/ administrator has had a profound impact on you concerning diversity and inclusion on campus?”

Josh Romero: “There’s been a lot of great people on this campus that have made an impact on me concerning diversity and inclusion on campus. But if I had to choose one it will be the Head Football Coach (Bill Khayat). Being on the team for three years and having a great relationship with him has made me more concerned about diversity and inclusion around campus.”

bctornados.com: In your own words, explain why diversity and inclusion are important in college athletics, and at Brevard specifically.

Josh Romero: “Diversity is important in college athletics because it helps us to value and respect others more. Inclusion is also important because it brings everyone together and makes them feel welcomed.”
