BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College Tornados Women's Basketball team (9-10, 5-8 USAS) toppled the visiting Agnes Scott College Scotties (1-21, 1-11 USAS) by a final score of 73-49 on Saturday afternoon at the Boshamer Gymnasium behind a balanced attack. The Tornados improved to an impressive 6-3 record within the confines of the Boshamer Gymnasium, which is one win shy of tying the most single-season home wins in BC's NCAA-era history, which was set in both the 2009-10 and the 2017-18 season.
Every Tornado that dressed for Head Coach Donald Hudson saw significant playing time in Saturday's matinee. BC tallied a season-high 23 assists on 29 made baskets. This ball distribution effort shows up in the BC NCAA-era record books as the third-most single-game assists, trailing 29 assists put up on January 11, 2010, against Truett-McConnell, and 24 assists on January 17, 2009, against Wingate University.
"I thought that the biggest thing that stood out today was our ability to share the basketball," commented Coach Hudson after Saturday's victory. "It has been something that we have talked about all year, and although it hasn't happened as much as we would've liked, it showed up today. When you can move the ball like that, it infects the whole team, everyone feels good, and everyone gets a touch."
Six BC Tornados had three assists or more in the contest, which propelled Brevard's offense to shoot an efficient 49.2% (29-of-59) from the field compared to Agnes Scott's 38.8% (19-of-49) mark.
Sophomore guard Ty'She Washington enjoyed a fantastic all-around outing to lead the Tornados. Washington tallied a team-high 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting, hitting 3-of-4 from long-distance. The Charlotte, N.C. native added three assists, and a whopping total of six steals to Brevard's defensive effort. Washington's six steals were a career-high mark, surpassing her previous count of five steals recorded last season against William Peace.
Deja Riddick added 10 points for BC on a near-perfect 5-of-6 shooting in just 17 minutes of action as the Tornados cycled through their lineup.
Avery Lockwood and Destiny Williams led the Tornados' passing renaissance, each recording four assists. Lockwood grabbed a team-high six rebounds to bring her season total to 163.
Sophomore guard Shakirah Thompson provided a spark off the bench, draining 3-of-7 beyond the 3-point arc for nine points, while senior guard Annalee Bollinger tallied eight points on 3-of-6 shooting, including two 3-pointers.
Agnes Scott was led by way of Garis Grant's double-double effort, recording 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Scotties.
Brevard led the contest wire-to-wire, as the Tornados jumped out early and never looked back. A Washington 3-pointer capped off a 7-0 scoring run to begin action for the Tornados. Agnes Scott would keep things within striking distance, as ASC's Annie Weimerskirch ended the first quarter with a long-range shot to cut Brevard's lead to 17-12.
The second and third quarters were all Brevard as the Tornados took control of the contest. An 11-2 Tornado run kicked off the second period, as Lockwood hit Riddick in the paint to extend BC's lead to 28-14 with 6:18 left in the second quarter. BC extended its lead to 21 points at 39-18 as Washington drilled a 3-pointer with 1:01 left in the half. Brevard took a 39-30 lead to the locker rooms.
Riddick led the Tornados' attack, scoring eight first-half points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from the field. Brevard swelled its lead in the second quarter thanks to a 22-8 scoring advantage in the period.
Brevard put the contest out of reach thanks to a game-high 13-0 scoring run which lasted until the 4:40 mark in the third quarter. BC carried a 28-point, 59-31 lead into the final quarter of action.
A Washington 3-pointer extended Brevard's lead to a game-high 35 points at 70-35 with 5:36 left in the contest. The Scotties put together a 10-0 run after Washington's bucket to cut Brevard's lead to 70-45, however it proved too little too late as the Tornados glided to a 73-49 victory at the Bosh.
Led by Washington, BC's defense swiped 11 steals on the afternoon. Brevard's bench ended the contest outscoring the Agnes Scott reserves by a commanding 26-9 margin. The Tornados scored 17 points on fast breaks and turned 17 Agnes Scott turnovers into 24 points-off-turnovers. Both sides ended action with an equal 30 points in the paint.
The Tornados return to action early next week as they travel to Raleigh, N.C. for a non-divisional matchup with William Peace University (11-8) on Monday at 6 p.m. BC returns to the Boshamer Gymnasium for back-to-back USA South matchups against Huntingdon on Friday, February 1 at 6 p.m., and against Covenant on Saturday, February 2 at 2 p.m.
