Tornados Open Cross Country Season with Eye-Opener Festival

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Brevard College men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2022 seasons with races on Friday evening at the Eye-Opener Festival at the Milliken Research Center in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The BC men's team finished seventh and the women's team 12th against a highly competitive field that featured several NCAA Division I teams.  

The men's team (222 points) finished ahead of seven schools and behind race winner Furman, ETSU, USC Upstate; UNC Pembroke, Wofford, and Converse. 
 
Junior Devon Brodmyer placed 20th out of 119 runners with a time of 27:01.4.  The effort by Brodmyer gave him the second-highest finish by a non-NCAA Division I runner only behind overall race winner Drew Topoly of Methodist.
 
Junior Dalton Hawley (42nd place) was the second-casters Tornado with a time of 28:27.  Garrett Spangler finished 47th with a 28:38.9 to give Brevard three runners in the top-50 of the field.  Justin King (69th), Blayne Morton (90th), Michael Fader (91st), and Jacob Moore (99th) rounded out the scoring for the Tornados.
 
On the women's side, junior Zoe Capps (23:24.9) led the way for BC with a 66th-place finish. Twenty four seconds later came sophomore Haylea-Layne Miller with a 68th place result.   Sophomore Sandra Diaz-Martinez placed 70th with a. 24:39.8 finish.  Sophia Ogawa and Ashton Cashwell also competed at the event for Brevard.
 
The BC cross country teams will return to action on September 17 at the Mike and Mary Kay Johnson Classic in Berea, Kentucky.
